Climbing roses with clematis

I have a pergola and last year I planted Clematis Jackmanii next to one of the columns. This year two climbing roses are coming: Crown Princess Margareta, A Shropshire Lad and Clematis Niobe. My plan was to plant ASL with Niobe and not sure about CPM with Jackmanii, since I am not sure if clematis will overpower the rose. Any suggestions for either combination?

Referring back to the current threads on the forum, how mature will these roses be? Jackmanii is huge, 9-12 feet high but very vigorous. Niobe is smaller, 7-9 feet, and not so intimidating as a plant, should do very well.

Debbie of Silver Star Vinery sells both of these and has an excellent photo of Jackmanii that will give you a sense of its size. You might want to consider Harlow Carr instead of Jackmanii. The flowers are airier in effect and would allow the rose to dominate, it has the height you're seeking and its vigor isn't intimidating. In addition, it blooms all summer long and is also available at Silver Star. I menton SSV because their plants are always fabulous with very strong, well-developed root systems.

I have had a viticella clematis (Polish Spirit) overwhelm a rose, and the rose eventually died.

Well generally you can prune any group to some extend, just that you have to see when to do it, if clematis blooms on old wood, then better to do it after spring bloom. The main difference for me mostly is that group 3 usually is less trouble if you neglect it for a year, since you just cut it back in spring, when the other groups can be rather annoying toothpicking, especially if it gets between the other plants. Also, you do not have to necessarily cut it back to a few inches even if it is in group 3, it is more about where you want the blooms to be. This group clematis blooms on new growth, so if you cut it lets say at 1 meter high, all the flowers will be higher up than that. It is useful if you want clematis to bloom above your shrub roses for example. In general though you have to keep in mind that clematis attaches itself with the leafstalks to the other plants and structures, so usually it is annoying to get it out of the rose no matter what pruning group it belongs to (unless you prune the rose or don't care about leftover wood). I prefer to have roses and clematis near each other, but so that only few canes/liannas mix, or plant together varieties that do not need annual pruning, just some tidying up.

This post has brought to my attention that I DON'T have a place to sit outside and drink tea or coffee. In Washington I had a bench under the apple tree in the middle of the garden, and another bench in the roofed front door entrance where I could sit protected from wind and rain all through the winter. Here, nothing. The wisteria pergola in front of the house would be fine if it weren't a chronic work site and staging ground for everything. This realization of my lack of an outdoor place to drink tea/coffee has reinforced my idea that we need a nice big oak between our house and the terrace of our second house. We might have to take up a bit of terrace, job for a jackhammer, and the tree would be big enough to do its job about the time I died in advanced old age. But posterity would have a place to pile pots and bags of sand and compost under the oak, and still be able to sit outdoors to enjoy the morning. Melissa

Westerland Climbing Rose & Purple Clematis?

Hallo - Your roses are gorgeous. I'm sure I would want Westerland or perhaps one a little darker orange planted with a deep purple clematis. I would prefer if neither one faded, if that's possible. Thanks for your help. I just don' want it washed out against my 'white' fence. Altorama - do you have a pic of your Westerland too? I wasn't really planning on any particular clematis, just thinking on a deep purple clematis, that someone on the forum might recommend? Please don't tell me to paint the fence....LOL

I have Zephirine Drouhin, a shade tolerant, nearly thornless climbing rose with Prince Charles clematis, a light lavender-blue. They don't have a completely overlapping bloom, with ZD beginning first and PC overlapping with the later ZD bloom. Here it is in late June with PC just starting. I have a trellis because ZD and most other climbing roses aren't reliably cane hardy here, so I've never tried this without some supplemental support. You can grow clematis into any stiff-stemmed shrub. One of my favorites is Clematis Little Bas growing into Hydrangea paniculata 'Quickfire'. Here, the clematis starts blooming mid-June with the GF buds, then the bloom overlaps for a couple of weeks, and then the QF continues blooming until frost with the blooms shading slowly to deep pink. Clematis Mikelite and Romatika scrambling around on top of a row of Fothergilla shrubs. The Fothergilla has early spring bloom and stunning autumn foliage color, so this gives it some summer interest. I was inspired to do this a number of years ago by another gardener on this forum, so I am just passing on the enabling.

Jackmanii is vigorous, Polish Spirit is very vigorous, there are very large and vigorous clematis in all the types. You really need to research a clematis and it's ultimate size and growth habit before planting it with a rose. They are wonderful companions if you have the right clematis with the right rose. Clematis on the Web has information and photo's of most clematis and is a good resource. It's not just a matter of choosing a color, it is a matter of finding a clematis with the color you want that also plays nice with the rose. Sue grows a ton of clematis and knows/grows them well. I have Niobe planted with Sombreuil and it is well mannered :-). You might also ask about particular clematis at the clematis forum on GW. Very smart people over there too.

Thanks! Jackmanii will be staying alone. Niobe will pair. I need to find a vibrant purple clematis with good behavior. I'll check Clematis on the web and Silver Star Vinery. Clematis Beauty of Worcester will be coming which is blueish and not as big. May be that will do. Thanks again.

Even where you live in PA I can assure you that the only roses you would ever pair with Jackmanii should be ones both very vigorous and also fairly long-caned (12'-15'+). Jackmanii is gorgeous, but very vigorous. I can imagine it working nicely with New Dawn in a situation where New Dawn was in its vigorous glory (although a deeper pink would be even nicer).
