The interesting thing about Iris is that there are two types, the bulb type and the rhizomate type. Siberian Iris, like the Douglas Iris, Pacific Hybrids and other Asian Iris are rhizomate.

Missouri Iris, Bearded Iris and others are bulb Iris.

A name like Siberian Iris should suggest something to you. These guys grow in wet temperate areas and more importantly are geared to sharp seasonal cycles. Even the pacific hybrids only make it down the California coast line from places like the Frazier River valley because the coast is cool and moist.

Plant your Siberian Iris seeds in the late Winter and watch them sprout in spring. Keep them from being killed from excessive dry heat. You are in Florida. That's pretty far from the range of Siberian Iris. But hey, I planted a dozen Douglas Iris rhizomes which I had shipped to me from a Oregon Coast Nursery and four of them survived the Bakersfield California Dry heat so far. No flowers yet, just green blades holding their own. Bakersfield may as well be a desert, except for the Kern River. So it's not impossible to grow Iris in extreme conditions. Hopefully my four survivors will be a hardy source for clones that will propogate here.

I will plant Pacific Iris seeds this Winter which I obtained from Thompson & Morgan. I intend to germinate them indoors and let them get started indoors. I figure they will die before getting too far along if planted outside, even in Bakersfield's Spring weather.

I don't know how these will do in your climate (recommended zone range is 3-9 generally), but I do know they are fairly specific in what they require for germination. Warm moist, cold moist, cool moist, in that order.

Impervious seed coats. Shake in dry sharp sand or nick carefully with a file. Sow at 64-71ºF for 2-4 wks, move to 24-39ºF for 4-6 wks, move to 41-53ºF for germination which may be erratic (meaning not all the seedlings will appear at the same time)

Easy way to do them is put them in a tiny zip lock with just a tsp or two of sterile moist vermiculite or sterile moist sand, leave them on your desk. Date the bag. Then move the bag to your refrigerator (not freezer) and date again. If your temperatures by the end of the second period are close to 50, or an average day/night of 50 in Fall to Winter, take your bag of seeds and sow the contents, vermiculite and all, place outdoors. (I have a problem achieving that 50ish temp indoors and depend on Mother Nature here).
