flex pvc woes

Hey there ponders,

Anyone have any problems getting 1Â½" PVC Hose to fit into the 1Â½" PVC adapter fitting? It was really tight and I could get it in about Â½" . Do I need to sandpaper the hose a little?

I have to use barbed fittings and clamps to connect flex hose to PVC.

Heat the end of the flex (not so flexable) pvc pipe with a hair dryer. after a little bit it will be soft and expanded then put it on the barbed connector. it should fit much better. it will shrink back down to the normal size and should have a pretty tight fit. a clamp may be needed to make sure their is no leaks

The black pipe is almost certainly polyethylene-- an excellent choice for that purpose, in my opinion. An adapter of the style below is best. I suggest avoiding galvanized steel adapters as they will rust and will be consumed by electrolysis if directly connected to copper or brass-- but they are stronger than any non-metallic adapters. I use two clamps at each adapter. Be sure you have the correct style and size for your pipe. The adapter should be difficult to insert and to remove-- tight fit. If not, it is the wrong one. Boy--after all the time spent reading on this forum I stilled missed this one. They got this one by me because the company DID specify the type of plumbing and size on the pre-written contract. It was a rather rough day with the PB. Whether or not I will be OK with the flex plumbing is second to the issue that they were not upfront about using it. "It would be good for you to specify to the PB and plumbing Sub to not use any type of flex-pipe." Too late--did I forget to mention we decided to risk a good portion of our retirement funds (or what left of them) to support the economy--yes we are in mid-build. I would make sure others pay attention to golfgeek's suggestion. On this pre-written, form contract I didn't think I had specify no flex because the contract said "2 inch diameter Schedule 40 PVC." ''Flexible SCH 40 pipe encased in concrete or in the dirt in it's natural curvature will do fine.'' I would be interested in your assessment of the quality of this particular product and for the purposes it was used:(1) connecting the skimmers to the rigid PVC below and (2) running the top circular run ??? (don't know what you call it) of the spa plumbing--the jets coming up from the floor and plumbing below were done in the rigid PVC--although that was a hard fought concession. I don't know if this makes any difference, but the spa is attached with a spillover and is raised 18 inches. Ah . . . the fine print (or loophole) in this case per Huskyridor's comment "Yes, it can include flex too." Live and learn. I was given a "take or leave it option" (nice) by management as the plumber was scheduled to finish today. This was NOT the only issue of the day. After a sleepless night and stressful day I'm really worn out. Thanks for all the input.

I will post pictures tonight after I get home from work. I glanced at the counters this morning, and the caulk was drying clear but the thicker caulk was not clear yet. We used caulk in the bathroom recently that went on white and dried clear. There were parts of the dried caulk where it looked like you could see the rough edges through the caulk. I just have to look at it in more detail tonight. snookums - The granite fabricator is not the same company that is doing the floors. The floors were done by a sub through the GC. The granite fabricators were picked by the KD, and she's worked with them for several years. I am questioning her attention to detail as she said she had never really noticed before that granite could have chips in it like our island did. After I told her about ours she went home and discovered that she had them in the granite in her house and just never noticed. I am hoping that the wavy edge looks tolerable once the caulk is all dried. Some of the fabricators on GW seem to indicate that the wavy edges were normal and shouldn't be something I should complain about.

HVAC Woes - Need Advice.

We own a 1440 square foot manufactured home. It is located in southeastern North Carolina. We had a new Goodman HVAC 3 ton 13 SEER system installed before we moved in, fall of 2006. Other than having to replace the capacitor about 3 years ago, it worked well until May of this year when the A/C wouldn't come on. When the problem happened we were unable to contact the company that we purchased our system from so we called another HVAC contractor who informed us that the company who installed our unit had gone out of business. At first they said, that the ductwork needed to be completely replaced because feral cats that roam the area had tore the ducts down. We gave the go ahead to them to install new ductwork. We came home from a medical appointment the next day to find the workers already at our house after we had been told that they would call before coming. They told my husband that they had arrived to find the HVAC unit overheating and just before catching fire. We were confused because we had the unit turned off at the thermostat since it wasn't working. We were then told that we were going to have to get a whole new system at a cost of almost $6000.00. We told them to wait while we contacted our home owner's insurance company to see if they would pay. While waiting to hear from the insurance, we ran into a man who worked for the business that had originally installed the unit. Turns out they hadn't gone out of business but had changed phone numbers. They offered to come and take a look free of charge so we said okay. They told us that the unit was repairable but since our insurance agreed to pay we decided to get a new system as the unit was almost 10 years old. We decided to go with the company who had done the work when we first moved in because their price was lower and they were going to install all metal ductwork instead of flex so we wouldn't have to worry about further damage from the cats. The work was completed quickly and we were soon enjoying the Goodman 3 ton 14 SEER system but not for long. When the outside temps were in the low to mid 80's all was good but once the temps started going above 90 this unit will not keep the temperature at or even near to what we set the thermostat. We had it set at 75 degrees but the temperature in the house would be anywhere from 8 to 15 degrees higher. We lowered it to 72 but still could not keep cool. When we received our electric bill it was the highest ever in spite of this new unit supposedly being more energy efficient. The man who runs the business has been sick so they have closed temporarily but will reopen in a week or so and they will check things out then but I was just wondering if anyone has any ideas as to what could be wrong? Thanks for any advice.

What type of PVC hose? I use spa flex (Tiger-flex) and have never had a problem. I do use the PVC cement (IPS Weld-On PVC 795) intended for flexible pipe for my connections. After primer and cement they do slide together easier if your using the right stuff.

lsst - yes I'm using pvc cement.

I'm using the hose that came with the Pond Kits with Savio Components from Pondliner.com The hose is the waterfall/biofall bottom drain.

I have an extra fitting so DH did the gluing with his "super human brute strength" grunt as he shoved it in. It is now holding water and will hopefully last.

If it doesn't I'll saw it off and try again with the extra fitting. Would just a regular saw work on flex pvc? (hope I don't jinx it)

DH used to use a saw on pvc pipe, until he got a tool for cutting pvc pipe at the hardware store. Greatest thing since sliced bread. We live on a farm and there is a need for keeping supplies on hand at all times. Lots of broken water pipes due to human or horse activity. Someone forgets where the water spigots are and backs over them or some similar error in judgement. Haven't heard the last of that one yet. Glenda

You can use a regular saw. If it is holding water, you should not have a problem.

My only tip, at least the flex PVC I use, is too stiff for barbs and clamps. The stuff is too strong to crimp to a barb, its gotta be slip fittings and glue. Otherwise the suggestions sound good.

Hose clamps should work fine. When I am working with plumbing hose or irrigation hose I take a thermos of boilimg water to where I am working. Put the hose end in the hot water and it will get soft in a matter of seconds without the need of an electric line. Sandy

I need to connect from 3 inch flex PVC to 3 inch rigid PVC. Does anyone know of a source for such a connector?

I thought I'd bring back this posting as it's sort of the trouble I'm having. I have a barbed hose adaptor 1-1/2" (not sure it's pvc but it's black plastic) and am having trouble slipping the 1-1/2 black kink-free hose onto it.

So, are my options:
-heat the end of the hose using a hair dryer or hot water;
-sand down the barbed end a bit;

Not to worry as a hose clamp is part of the setup and will be applied afterward.

Anything else? Would wetting it with vaseline or some type of lubricant (something that's reasonably fish safe) help? I know sometimes you can sort of twist the barb end as you are pushing it into the hose but I can't really get a good grip on the barbed end as it keeps 'swiveling' in the base that screws onto the pump (Hard to explain).

Any advice/help is appreciated. The other end of the hose that goes onto the aquascape microfalls fits just right.

Glen, heat it in hot water. That way, you heat the hot and wet it at the same time. It should slip right on as long as you heat it long enough. Make sure you put the clamp around the hose before you slide it on.
