Growing medium fro conifer seeds

Hello all. This is my first post on this forum. I'm usually over on the Conifers forum but since this post deals with growing from seed I thought I'd try this forum instead.

This winter I'm thinking of growing some white pine, white spruce, concolor fir and Colorado blue spruces from seed and I'm wondering what the best growing medium is for starting these trees. I understand that some people use only coarse sand, others use a sand/peat moss mixture, some use pea gravel or crushed granite, some users comercially-prepared soil mixes, etc.

Also, what kind of fertilizer, if any, should be added to the soil mixture along with the seeds?

I plan to sow the seeds late this fall in small containers and overwinter the seeds outdoors (natural stratification).

Any suggestions on what type of soil mix works best to start the seeds would be very helpful. I want to avoid damping off disease so perhaps a "soiless" mix would be best?

Thanks.

Dave
