Name That Plant!

I dug some up

10 years ago

and put a couple in pots and three in the ground but,
I'm not entirely sure what it is- only a general idea. Because I want to care for them properly, I'm asking for help.
-What exactly is this plant?
-Will the same plant come back every year or die, as I live in Reading, PA?
-Will the potted plants survive winter indoors?

Thanks jeffbc, I think that is the plant. It is called a squarestem spikerush and in reading info about it on that website it looks like it is listed as endangered here in Wisconsin. I'll have to try my best to keep it growing. I will try to contact the person I got the muck topsoil from to let him know he has endangered plants growing where he is getting the muck topsoil he is selling.

Dear Chemo: The pretty purple looks a LOT like "Dusky Challenger" - one of the most popular irises around. The pink is nice too although I don't know the name. Those irises were all from a few rhizomes I purchased locally...it was one variety that was bred locally. The one I 'bought' was the pink one, and then the dark one just appeared one season. I always kind of thought maybe it was not stable or something, and that the rhizome had reverted back to something 'original'. I guess that must not be the case though, according to the FAQ here. Someday while I'm in town, I may try and catch the woman who hybridized it, and see if she knows its parentage....just for fun. Sue

Well, it's mid-October now, but I didn't want to start a new thread. I did want to share a picture of my Nodding Ladies Tresses, Spiranthes cernua. (If I can figure out how to link the camera phone picture!) They're a hardy native orchid I bought this spring, and I've been looking forward to them all summer. I'm hoping they won't always bloom so late, altho' they look really nice with the blue flowers of the leadwort. (The leaves directly behind the orchids are actually from a stray pale pink touch-me-not; I should probably try to make the combination permanent!) Now here's hoping they survive the winter!

My understanding is that it won't hurt your house, or at least not the bricks, but I wouldn't let it get into the gutters. Lucky you, I want it more upfront, I have it growing in my wooded area, but my husband, the cronic hypercondriac and city boy, swears that it is one of the poison vines. I've been wanting to get it going on one of my fence lines and he keeps trying to kill it. Luckly it's not easy to kill, but because of his efforts, I can't get a good full fence line of it. And to think, people actually buy the stuff and he's trying to kill it.

Datura stramonium, if you want to look up it's cultural requirements.
We're here mainly to ID plants and pass on any relevant info.

Ken, I rarely give cultural info unless I see mis-information like...

Night shade berries should never be eaten
Pokeweed is totally toxic and should be destroyed.
Lantana only grows in Zone 10, etc.

Or, don't let your bulbous plants go to seed. That is completely false!
An expert grower from the UK gave us a talk about bulbs and seeds.
His opinion was that the formation of seed actually helped the bulb by keeping it in active growth for a longer period of time.

FYI, many choice bulbs can be grown from seed. This includes Tulipa and Narcissus species, Colchicum, Cyclamen, Scilla, Galanthus.
Some of the most choice Galanthus bulbs sold today came up as chance seedlings in gardens.
The reason to deadhead bulbous plants is to keep aggressive forms from seeding in.
