Planting an Apple Tree from Seed

My grandmother of 92 just moved off of her farm and into an apartment. It was the best thing for her, but we're all a little sad.

There was an unidentified apple tree that my grandfather kept in the yard that had the most unique and delicious apples. I wanted to keep those apples with me.

Sooooo, I grabbed a few seeds and wanted to plant an apple tree in my yard. But I need help!

Here are my initial questions:

- what are the odds an apple seeds will grow into a fruit bearing apple tree?

- how long can I keep it in a pot?

- when do I transplant it to a yard?

- any good books on growing apple trees you can reccommend?

I have a ton of questions, so mostly a good resource would be great. Thanks in advance!
