help identify this red-flowered shrub (pics)

I'm curious as to what kind of shrub this might be. Right now it's about 6 feet tall and I pruned it last fall when we moved into this house. The leaves are slightly toothed and there are what seem to be suckers from the main plant coming up all around. The red flowers are pretty though, and were quite a surprise. Thanks for the help!

It looks like a flowering quince. They have such beautiful flowers but are hard to keep nice form. Yours could probably use some more pruning (in late spring or early summer after flowering). It is recommended to prune to 6 -8 long, tall branches removing any crossing or badly spaced stems. To increase flowers for next year - spur-prune - or cut back sideshoots to two or three leaves - to produce more abundant flowers. It is probably best to renovate your bush over two or three years. That was definitely it. I thought I had seen something similar in a catalog a while back but couldn't put my finger on it. I wonder if it will develop fruit? Now I just have to get rid of the mulberry that is invading the quince's territory.

Thank you all very much for your feedback!!! I am pretty sure that it is Campis Radicans -- as it looks identical to the vine on this campis radicans photo link. My interest stems from looking for a great vine/shrub to grow up the 6 ft. cedar fence in my back yard. I hope to achieve an attractive green look most (if not all) of the year --with some nice periodic flowering as well. I noticed this Campis Radicans growing on a neighbors fence and thought it might be a good choice for me. Any thoughts on a better choice? I live in the Denver area. Yes, I think that's what it is, too. A lot of Houston nurseries frequently have it. Try Buchanan's or Joshua's or Cornelius.

LOL @ Mary and treelvr, a little DOES go a long way, hah! I love chaparral sage too, and you''re right, Mary, too much water, especially in summer, will kill it quickly. My established plants only get watered every other week in summer and once a month in winter. Fun plants, and fun discussion. If you get one Glendale_gardener, keep us posted! Happy gardening!

The quince that produces fruit and this one are two entirely different species - no fruit on this one.

My flowering quince 'Texas Scarlet' produces fruit.

Yes, flowering quince often fruit and these can be used as well as those of Cydonia oblonga.
