bird's nest spruce

I planted eight of these spruces last year and they did well over the winter but now many are beginning to look very brown (started with a couple of brown leaves 2 weeks ago and now one or two look dead).

How can I tell whether they are getting too little or too much water or perhaps something else is the problem.

They get sun over 4 hours per day and are nounded up so they are slightly higher than the surroundings.

Water: look at roots. Might as well start with the brown ones, they aren't going to mind.

Something else: examine needles. Take to Extension Office or Master Gardener clinic if you can't tell what you are looking at.

no conifer holds it needles forever ... most browning and falling off in 1 to 3 years .. interior needles are the oldest.. its entirely normal .... unless you give us a pic and show us otherwise ... ken

I've seen them 5' tall and 8' or more across but then we tend grow things big out here :-)) And it takes a very long time to achieve that size. Plant tag info is often incorrect and with trees and shrubs, typically reflects a 10 year size. Sources indicate mature size to be 5' tall and 10-12' wide.

Yikes! Thanks Josh! Like I said, this is my first evergreen/spruce and I didn't realize repotting at this time was a bad idea! I have it in an East facing window that gets morning sun, would this suffice? I live in a 4-family apartment and worry about setting it outside as it may get knocked over or what not Also, I am still curious about the brown/black bumps on the branches...are those normal(cones/buds), or something to worry about(galls)? Thank you!
