I can't answer your question, Ceterum, but I have asked it myself. I saw Ginger Syllabub at the Philly Flower Show a few years ago and immediately wanted to have it, even tho my success with modern roses by English hybridizers has been MUCH less than stellar. My primary question at the time was whether GS would thrive/bloom well in my heat/hi humidity, but I was also concerned, like you, about its disease resistance. I backed-off when I found a rating notation at HMF indicating that GS's resistance is only fair. I don't know if that comment had to do with BS or mildew, but I decided not to take a chance. Experience has taught me that if resistance is 'fair' in most locations, it's going to be poor to very poor where I garden. I can attempt to deal with bush roses that have 'issues', but I simply can't cope with climbers that do.

I don't think Reve d'Or clashes with Crepuscule. In fact, if you're looking for a color contrast, there won't be much of one between those two. As for thorns on Reve d'Or, there's not a super abundance of them, but they're wicked -- fairly large and curved perfectly into an effective clothing- & flesh-grabbing hook.

Thanks Windeaeux. It looks like very few people grow this rose. The HMF grower is from inland, high mountain CA, so I assume bs is not a problem there.
Pickering states that GS has "clean, healthy leaves" - I hope that is true not only in Canada but a bit further south on the east coast. I found though a disappointing review about this climber on the Antique rose forum from Georgia. I hoped that Harkness was able to repeat in terms of foliage (even better if fragrance would be just as good) what he accomplished with Compassion. That is a climber I do not have to spray in my garden despite its less than ideal spot.

I think you will find many roses BS resistent, but completely free of it in any climate - no. This stuff is incidious and hard to kill under normal conditions, let alone damp ones. So, even BS resistent roses will have some anyway, no matter what.

Roseman, you are right. My question was not phrased very well; actually, it was phrased poorly. I should have asked instead, if Ginger Syllabub can be grown no spray in the humid southeast. I do have many roses that I can grow such a way here, a few Noisettes like Crepuscule, Jane Desprez or Marechal Niel (though this last one needs treatment against botrytis)- they never need spraying against blackspot. I don't need to spray Perle d'Or or Arethusa, nor Clotilde Soupert and Gruss an Aachen is clean most of the time. I should mention a few teas as well but I cannot recall them top of my head. Of the hybrid musks, Prosperity has pristine foliage.
Of the modern roses Laguna, Floral Fairy tale and a few others have spotless foliage. Cherry Parfait performs great, except it gets cercospora in the fall. And Compassion is a great, fragrant climber. I have a few G. Buck roses that are also proved to be "no spray" in my garden.

So, no matter ho much I love HTs, I must turn to roses that require much less maintenance, especially in terms of spraying. Several serious ailments force me to switch to lower maintenance roses. I still dislike the Knockouts, so I try to find more interesting and more pleasing specimens. Fortunately breeders come out with more disease resistant roses very year.
This change is going to be difficult but I hope it will not be impossible; I do not want to abandon my love of roses altogether.

We live in just about one of the most humid areas of the US, right on the coast in RI. Have had a Ginger Syllabub Climbing Rose for several years now, bought as an own root rose from Heirloom Roses. It's lovely and blooms all summer. No black spot.

I had a 5 ft. rose ( forget what) got BS and denuded it...I cleaned up the area and the next year it came back ( own root) vigorous and strong and was fine ever since..I didn't spray either. Don't know if this is the usual thing but thought I would share. I have lived in dry climates up until now( Oregon) So my experience with BS might be increasing now! LOL

Reve d'Or is bullet proof in my yard. I think it would be a nice contrast to Crepescule, which has a more intense color. The thorns are manageable. I have it on an arbor over a gate.

It was full of BS here. I gave it three years then removed it. Beautiful flower thou I must say.
