what i knew as the snowball bush.. was not a fragrant V ... the fragrant one i have is Mohawk ... the latin is: Viburnum x burkwoodii 'Mohawk' and the key there.. is the burkwoodii ... its that second name.. in the trinomial ... that is going to be defining in searching ... there are a bazillion Vs ..... what you should do .. if local.. is find out how to root them ... and go back and beg a piece or 3 to root the exact plant .. you offer two pix... and to my eye.. the flowers look nothing alike.. the first looks like the old fashioned nonfragrant ..... and the latter my fragrant one ..... and therein lies part of your problem ... they differ in size.. [which you cant tell because there is no scale] ... thickness.. [the fragrant ones are much smaller and thicker]... etc ... i doubt you will find such by computer pix alone ... the real trick here.. is to hit all the local nurseries.. when the plants are blooming .. and buy one that looks .. in person.. like you remember.. and smells as you remember... shopping online to memory.. may or may not work out.. for a specific plant .. but even if you fail.. specifically ... you will end up with some great smelling Vs just like any other flowering plant.. buy it when its flowering.. to insure you get what you want .... ken

That is helpful! I think the drainage decides the issue for sure. In the backyard, the ground often stays damp towards the rear. But in front of the house, that foundation box drains out (it is sort of above grade). One hint--there has been some kind of holly growing there, which has done fine. Leggy, but robust. I just dislike it, and it wants to grow too big. Ken, I am in DC. I checked my members page, and my zip code is in there--no separate space to enter a city, that I can see. Am I missing something? Anyway, the heat does dry the soil out when there is not much rain. Does Daphne need it to be dry all the time, or just sometimes? Actually, in really heavy rain, the gutter above sometimes overflows onto that spot. Is excess water a problem in and of itself? I just noticed some landscaping by a big building in my neighborhood. I think there are a bunch of Daphne x B. there. No blossoms now, but suggestive little buds, and leaves that look like the pictures. It's on a slope.

Don't check in often, but Viburnum questions draw me like a moth to a flame... esh has some good advice - supported by Dirr is OK. I'd add to what was said: MUST OVERLAP IN BLOOM TIME. All the choice plants in the world don't help each other with cross-pollination if their blooming doesn't coincide. I have all those species mentioned above; I think annebert may like 'Conoy' best for appearance and compact size, if those are values or concerns. I'd look at 'Chesapeake' and 'Eskimo' as possible pollination partners, as well. These are both choice plants for mid-Atlantic states. As noted above, Viburnum x rhytidophylloides offers 'Alleghany' and 'Willowwood' among others. These are very large coarse plants; give them 15-20' to spread their wings. Viburnum rhytidophyllum is a fine plant, albeit large. I dare say you should never confuse it with Viburnum x pragense. Prague will have quite glossy and much smaller leaves than Viburnum rhytidophyllum, and will have much less of a leathery leaf. The underside of Prague's leaves will also be highly tomentose, to the point of silveriness. annebert: If you live anywhere near the US National Arboretum, it would be well worth your time for a visit and a "one stop shop" review of many species of viburnums. I had the recent fortune of a brief sojourn to Washington DC the first weekend in May, and it was a glorious time to tour around with many species (as well as other mundane taxa) in bloom. Additionally, if you live closer to Philly, go to the Scott Arboretum at Swarthmore College campus, or one of the DuPont estates where extensive collections are planted. July will be a great month to observe the extent of fruit set possible, when great pairings make that possible.

Thanks to everyone's input so far. I have a bunch of different viburnums (this forum really opened my eyes a number of years ago) and I think Blue Muffin is the most underwhelming! I have wild dentatums, so am hoping for pollination from them. So far the fall color is non-existent, the flowers low-key, and I haven't noticed the berries, though it is in a shrub border where I don't often spend time in the fall. It may end up getting shovel pruned or moved to a less visible spot at some future time, but I have enough planting space that it isn't important now. Since I live in a rural area, I have muliple wild acerifolium and cassinoides as well, and really like both of them a lot. In addition to the healthy looking summer foliage, the pinkish-reddish tones of the autumn foliage lasts long after most of everything else has dropped all their leaves, and the color develops even in full shade. The flowers are striking in the woods in May, and the berries get eaten by the critters. A true multiseason pair of plants. I have a burkwoodii (I think, though it might be carlesii) planted between my kitchen ell and patio. Typically I'm not big on scented plants, but many years ago before I knew anything else about Viburnums, this one or a similar scented one grabbed my attention with its lovely scent wafting from a hedge near the front of the Denver Botanical Garden and I knew I HAD to own one where I'd get to appreciate it daily. The flowers are pretty, the fall color nice, and the winter buds decorative, but it's that spring scent drifting across the patio and through the kitchen windows that makes this plant a stunner. If I lived in an area where the foliage were more persistent in the winter, that would be a plus as well. I have a doublefile mariesii which when bought in the fall was brilliant red, but since it is now growing in full shade is much milder in fall color, though still nice. However, it blooms well, enough so that my husband (not a plant nerd) notices it and comments as he passes it on the fully wooded driveway. I've been told that it's easy to root, so I may well try rooting it to plant in full sun (maybe replacing that 'Blue Muffin'.) In my previous house I had three Am. cranberry bushes. The wildlife ignored the berries, and I found the plants pretty boring due to no scent or fall color, and I haven't seen any reason to change that opinion after seeing them in several arboretums and public plantings, so I didn't get more when we moved. I also had a couple of small starts or different Burkwoods that didn't make it after shipping damage, a 'Conoy' and a 'Mohawk', so I will probably try again for those with a different supplier. I also would be happy to see others' favorites, especially those that would be hardy here on the boundary between zones 4 & 5. (It sometimes reaches -22, but not most years.)
