I strongly recommend that you plant hellebores ... mine are gorgeous right now. The hostas will come later to fill in the blank spots. Woody hydrangeas (like Tardiva) are nice, and they don't totally disappear in winter like the lace cap or mop head varieties do. If you have enough space, you NEED camellias. I could go on and on.

a really, really quick space filler for shade are white impatiens (or, as we call them in the UK, bizzy lizzies). Oh, and white begonias will fit the bill for a season too. But yes, I could go on.....and on, having been a shade gardener for the first few years of my gardening existence before renting a sunny allotment.

I love my shade garden. There is an amazing variety of wonderful plants that grow in the shade. My garden goes from light to darker shade. There are lillies, dogwoods, Japanese maples, viburnams, fatsia, pittospermum, hydrangeas, fuschias, fox gloves, camellias, rhododenrens. It goes on and on. It is a pleasure to walk from the bright hot rose garden into the restful shade. You can create a wonderful combination of textures and colors. Here are a few photos.

Rhodedendrons would be beautiful! Hydrangeas are pretty, too. Sweet woodruff has a nice fragrance and makes a great groundcover, but can be more aggressive in some areas. With our long, cold winters...it plays fairly well with others :)

Oh, and I forgot about alba roses...aren't they supposed to grow well, in shade? I know they have some nice pictures of them, at the Rogue Vallye Roses website. Maybe another idea?

Chinese ground orchids (Bletilla striata) interplanted with hellebores make a bright, easy show in early spring. Both look good even when not in bloom and nothing seems to bother them, unlike hosta which is snail food here.

Probably the things that work for us in the shade won't work for you. Our climates/conditions are too different. But the things that work there for us are epiphyllums, fibrous begonias, staghorn ferns, some succulents, and a handful of mite-resistant fuchsias. One fuchsia in particular, a vining cultivar, is wholly mite-resistant, and always in bloom here. We bought it years ago, promptly lost the tag, and have never since been able to ID the thing. Unable to buy another, we've propagated it and spread it to other areas.

I have a few roses in fairly deep shade, Single Cherry, the red spinosissima, Rosa majalis and Rosa glauca among them. I suppose they would bloom better with more light but so far they are not without flowers in their short season. It helps that my wood is a mix of conifers and deciduous trees so these roses bloom before the shade gets too dense.

My shade plants are the usual ones, ferns, hostas, hellebores, martagon lilies, rhododendrons, kalmias, pieris, dog's tooth lilies, wood anemones, hepaticas, bilberries, lilies-of-the-valley, Solomon's Seal, Cornus canadensis, epimediums, geraniums, woodruff, London Pride, atragene clematis of several species, depending on the degree of shade.

I don't grow any roses in my shade gardens.

My garden has two very shady areas of quite different character. The deeper shade is under a planting of four redwood trees where there is not only shade, but also root competition. The other shade area is in the inner L corner formed by two walls of my house. That one gets a few hours of morning light.

Under the redwoods I have some ferns, a couple of hydrangeas, some epimediums, some fuschias, cyclamens, some drought-tolerant heurcheras (not all heucheras are) and most rewarding of all, some hellebores. In my climate the astilbes and hostas I planted here died out. Japanese anemones and liriope also do well in these conditions but are too invasive for my tastes. I planted a few lilies but will probably move them to another location. They lean out at such an extreme angle to seek the sun that they really look rather dreadful there.

In the shady L that gets morning sun I grow abutilons, calla lilies, tree peonies, cranesbill geraniums, and more heucheras. I had lilies there and they were happy, but gophers ate them. I'll probably move the lilies from the redwood garden to this spot, but in wire baskets to protect them from the gophers.

If my soil were acidic, I could grow rhododendrons. I have tried but they are miserable in my high pH soil. Eventually they die. I have only one left of the many I planted and will not repeat this experiment. Over time I have come to think it constitutes actual plant abuse.
