Strange Fish Loss

I was going to give the six baby goldfish born in my pond this spring to a friend who just built a new pond. He was going to pick them up during the week, so I caught the fish over the weekend and had them stored in a small kiddy pool. The pool was on a raised concrete deck attached to my house and about fifty feet from my pond. I threw a few water hyacinths in the pool to give the fish some cover.

This morning, water was the only thing left in the pool. The fish were all gone and the plants were removed and laying all over the deck.

My yard is enclosed by a five foot fence. I've never seen any animals in the yard except neighborhood cats, chipmunks, and occasionally rabbits. I suspect it was a cat. My dog was sniffing all over the place when I left her out. Apparently it was smart enough to remove the half dozen plants to better catch the goldfish.

I was hoping the fish would enjoy a new home in a pond, not the belly of a cat. Next time, I'll use a bucket and keep the fish in my garage.
