Question RE Transplanting

Hello everyone,

I was wondering why seedlings need to be transplanted into bigger containers than the cells theat they germinated in. Basically, most of the ones that I've moved into peat pots don't have big roots anyway and when I think about the plants one buys from the nurseries, they have roots wound in a ball around the the soil in the cell. I guess you want to move them from seed starting medium into potting soil? But isn't it good enough to supplement the seed starting mix with liquid fertilizer or transplant solution once they start getting bigger until they are ready to be transplanted directly into the garden? It just would be so much easier than having to pot up all the seedlings to say nothing of the space issue under the lights. I would really be interested in hearing people's opinions and experiences with this process.

Thanks a lot,

Amna
