Large tree, currently in bloom

From afar, I thought this was a Dogwood simply blooming out of season; however, after having seen the foliage, I now have my doubts. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Very late winter or early spring transplanting is part of the secret. Pawpaw, unlike most deciduous trees, does not have recovery root growth while still dormant. Thinning the top growth to balance for loss of roots is always a good idea, but strongly consider painting the truck and branches with thin white (or in any case light colored) diluted latex pain or whitewash (which will wear off in a year or two). Full sun in 7b may be too much though. It is for mine.

I have a few more blooms to add to this thread. White Christmas re-bloomed with only 2 flowers but they were lovely and I put Party Pooper on one and papilio on the other, we shall see.. ..and Julia (Australian) which blooms faithfully for me each year which has a seedpod x Rio Negro which seems to have taken... ..and Exotic Star which also blooms faithfully each year.. ..and Valerie Maree (Australian) which last year gave me 3 scapes so I am surprised it found the energy this year to give me a few flowers even though they are smaller this year.. ..and the 3rd scape on my beloved Santos. I have a few seedpods that seem to have taken on the other 2 scapes.. ..and the ever beautiful Charisma. I had two seedpods one x papilio and the other x Chico that took me all the way but were full of bad seeds, I was disappointed. And, lastly my beloved Tango which was supposed to be La Paz but I am thrilled with Tango! She is a pinky red and she is lovely. Two scapes, the first with 4 flowers, a real winner! Last year I got a lot of good seeds x papilio which I am growing on. thanks for looking..Donna

Hi Freak, I bought a Black Purple last year from a US vendor. It has dark leaves and purple branches. It has not bloom yet. This year I bought a Black Purple from a Thai vendor who claims Black Purple and Anchan are different varieties (I communicated with them). It has green leaves and stems. It has not bloom yet. Then I bought Anchan from another Thai vendor. I grafted it on a two year old seedling and it bloomed (the pictures that I posted). It has green leaves and stems and the plant is identical to the Black Purple from the first Thai vendor. So, go figure. We have to wait until my plant with the dark leaves blooms to get the answer. There is a chance it might be a mislabeled plant but I doubt it, I got it from a reputable US vendor. George

catspat... I've found something of what I kept on the information about those China roses. I've no idea where I got it from, I'm still looking for the rest of it, it was very detailed and lengthy. I'll just post a paragraph here, I hope it's not copyrighted but I can't put a link as I've forgotten the source.. it was Old Gay Hill Red China, not the White Pearl.. Another group of suspected synonyms and sports that the results of this study support is a red, semi-double flowered group based on the China Rose cultivar Fabvier (syn. ‘Colonel Fabvier’). ‘Fabvier’, ‘Martha Gonzales’, and ‘Old Gay Hill Red China’ (C40, C10, and C16) all had identical SSR profiles. Based on catalogue descriptions of the plants in commerce (see Table 1 for information on sources), the results suggest that the found rose ‘Martha Gonzales’ is actually ‘Fabvier’, and that ‘Old Gay Hill Red China’, also a found rose, is a taller growth form sport of ‘Fabvier’. If I find the rest I'll post a link... edit here.. actually I've found the link, it's in pdf form and thesis written by Valerie Ann Soules of the N. Dakota State University.. titled ''Analysis of Genetic Diversity and Relationships in the China Rose Group''.. the paragraph above is on page 37 and on page 11 lists all the China roses analysed.. It's very lengthy and complicated. I must read it through sometime when I have about 3 days to spare.. there's around 60 pages... Unfortunately, this is about as good as it gets as far as detail of the foliage goes. If this is indeed a species of Cornus, any idea which one? I've never seen Cornus with such thick, glossy foliage before. What's also throwing me is the number of petals: In looking on-line I now see that our native Dogwood, Cornus nuttalli, is pictured with as many as 6 petals. However, I don't know that I have ever seen one in this vicinity with more than four; ditto Cornus florida. Is C. nuttalli that highly variable?

I think you got it (nutalli).
I've never seen a dogwood bloom out of season, but apparently it does (looked up).

There are two of these trees within maybe 3 miles of each other, one growing alongside the freeway and the other in a yard (the one pictured). That was my first inclination, also: C. nuttalli, blooming out of season; however, these two are so different from the rest of the natives that once I got a closer look at them, it made me reconsider. Very dark green, glossy foliage and loaded with blooms, while the usual nuttalli are actually rather anemic-looking, even in full sun. Of course, those in the full sun do have more blooms than those in the more densely-wooded areas, but I've never seen one with this many flowers. I'll see if I can get some additional pictures of both and post them, because now I'm really curious as to exactly how these specimens do differ. Thank you!

Certainly the opposite leaf arrangement helps to indicate that it could be a dogwood. Very pretty.

Dogwood often bloom twice in the PNW, once earlier in the spring and then in late summer.
