slug-like eating zinnia seedlings

They are 1/2" or so long, blackish, and were crawling all over the seedlings. I think I have seen them before on the underside of boards left in the garden.

Half inch could certainly be young slugs, and here in the slug capitol of the world they come in several colors...

Do you think they are slugs (easy to identify) or do you suspect something else? If slugs, you'd better get some bait out (many choices of environmentally friendly or otherwise at any garden center) or you won't have your seedlings for long. Another way to deal with them is to go out after dark with a flashlight, armed with a spray bottle of approx 1 part household ammonia to 4 parts water - spritz on the slug and it's dead in a heartbeat, ammonia/water won't harm your seedlings....just don't spray on plants in the heat of the mid day sun and that isn't when you would be finding slugs anyway.

Tammy, Possibly cutworms. They have been a problem for me in the past. Cutworms seem to like zinnia seedlings. I always dig down with my finger around the remaining stem to find the culprit and destroy it. Sometimes it takes several minutes to find it. Some people use a little protective collar on their seedlings, but that isn't always effective, and it is a rather tedious thing to do. So far I haven't used poison sprays to control cutworms, but a spray containing Bacillus thuringiensis kurstaki might be effective to kill the cutworms while they are still in their juvenile "free ranging" stage. I lost the first two plantings of vine crops to slug damage. One night, I went out with a flashlight to find 11 tiny slugs on one two inch leaf. Even though I handpicked and squashed them, the plant did not survive the attack. The first planting of cucumbers did not germinate, so I resowed. When they all germinated, I decided to transplant half of them to another section of the garden. Last night, I was out there 3 times picking and squishing..This morning most of them look desperate. It's only the one section of garden space that gets the most shade that is the problem. Crop rotation and less leaf mold next season hopefully will solve my problem. Egghead, I hope your second sowing is more successful than the first.

Slugs eating my blooms. Help please

I also endorse Sluggo - it saved my dahlias from complete destruction by slugs when the bulbs were just pushing up through the ground. In one 24 hour period, my dahlias were reduced to stubs, and I had to dig them up, replant and cross my fingers that they'd come back. After one treatment of the Sluggo, the slugs disappeared overnight. The bulbs are doing well, and it looks like I'll have blooms. As a backup, I also put out dishes of beer, and yes ... it worked exceptionally well. I'm sure you won't need to use the backup, but I was so desperate to save my dahlias that I was willing to try everything. Coffee grounds, beer, Sluggo. Best of luck!
