These plants are going to suffocate me in my sleep...I know it!

Husband and I bought a house in June, and with moving and whatnot, haven't had time to deal with the garden...so sad! The previous owners had some nice specimens (most of which they dug up and took WITH THEM!!! grrrr) and some...not so nice.

So we are finally settled somewhat and I decide to tackle the (now overgrown) garden.

I needed a flame thrower.

Or at the very least, a machete.

INSANE. First of all, there is a Morning Glory that is taking over. Seriously. I tried to prune it back but it is wrapped around the fence, around the neighbours tree, and at one point when I pulled on it, the pole they use for their clothesline shook...I abandoned hope at that point. It is pretty, but it is out of control!

It's not the one that really concerns me though. Oh no. What concerns me is the spiky, rose-thorn-like combination bush/vine that I tried to remove today. It, too, has wound itself through the fence, across to a neighbours tree, and around every living thing around it. I am seriously going to have NIGHTMARES about this plant. Feed me Seymour, indeed.

So I have included pics. I found a lone, solitary, sad looking Rhubarb in there. The trees are Rose of Sharon. But the rest...complete mystery.

And...my nemesis...the bush/vine that I used my husbands WELDING GLOVES to chop through and remove. Of course, the roots are still there, it took all my energy to eradicate the mess above. They will grow back, oh yes, I know it.

What the heck IS this evil from outer space growth in my back yard? Should I lock up the pets? Bolt the windows? Burn the house down? Move?

Any tips most appreciated. Oh...btw...they told me there was a blackberry bush in that corner. SURELY TO GOD blackberries don't behave this way?!?
