best roses for Lee/Collier Counties FLA

I am in Pinellas County, but I guess it is a similar climate for roses. I have Don Juan too and it's great. Last year I planted Our Lady of Guadalupe and it is amazing for me so far. Tons of scented pink flowers. The only rose I have that is blackspot free without spraying is Louis Philippe. It is own root but has been a slow grower.

My list of other roses (I still have them so they are at least somewhat good)All on fortuniana unless otherwise noted:

-Neptune
-Iceberg, Burgundy *gets lots of blackspot but springs back
-Chihuly
-Hot cocoa
-Queen Mary 2 (on Dr Huey/5 years old and still very vigorous)
-Natchitoches Noisette (own root 2 yrs old)
-Tiffany
-Elle
-Celine forestier (own root 2 years old)
-St. Patrick
-Souvenir de la malmaison
-Cherry Parfait
-Double delight (I am giving it one last chance)
-Gruss an Aachen- (brand new, I don't know the rootstock)

I removed these duds from my garden:
-Mister Lincoln (I planted 2 of them in the same spot, the definition of insanity)
-Lime Sublime (very disease prone)
-About Face
-Teasing Georgia

Hi neighbor! Avalon, I'm growing mostly old teas and chinas in containers here in NFM. I have the mini Sweet Chariot in a hanging pot but the thrips love it. :-( The old HT Mrs. Pierre S. du Pont seems to be spot free (I do not spray with fungicides). Mrs. du Pont doesn't have a lot of petals but if stays spot free I'll keep it. I just planted Belinda's Dream. It is an Earthkind rose and should be super disease resistant.

Suji - You are welcome to stop by my open garden near Brookeville on May 29 -30. A few folks come from near and far to see the garden and how it is changing year to year. This year with the devistation of 3 Blizzards and crushed roses, I'm guessing that we will have much of the wild look of years some time ago which some visitors may welcome again. With warm weather after the snow, my rose classes appear to be a few days ahead of schedule. However, there should not be a significan shortage of bloom. We always welcome rose enthusiasts of all sorts. I am even cultivating more visits by teasing a couple of local garden clubs with OGR talks this spring to come and smell the roses - even the HT folks sneak a peak sometimes (I may have a few of them as well). Please stop by and enjoy whatever we have and share some of your OGR stories and ideas as well. We'd love to share the garden such as it may be this spring. PS - The roses have already begun to bloom. Father Hugo's rose, Old Blush and Sophie's Perpetual have already begun to bloom and some HP's buds are showing color. What's not to love about zone 6b? I agree that you should contact Dr. Manners. Also, my 2 cents worth: Saturated true red, classic romantic rose form climber that does VERY well for me here in SW Fla z10 - Don Juan on Fortuniana rootstock. Covered with big fat blooms, even now when it is near 90 F everyday. They are large enough for cut flower displays and fragrant. It's important to get DJ on Fortuniana. Occasionally, you can find DJ on Fort at Home Depot, of all places. Just make sure that it has a tag on the pot that says Fortuniana. If possible, choose a spot that gets full sun in the Winter and partial shade in the Summer. Roses seem to do better here if planted very close to a building, like under the eaves. I'm not sure why - extra shade, extra water, maybe? Maybe it's the "head in the sun, feet in the shade" thing that they like. I dig big holes, put down rotted mulch, rotted cow manure, peat, maybe some bone meal and Epsom salts. I make sure that there is a watering well (a raised dam) all the way around the bushes' root zones. In Florida, it's important to only plant a grafted rose as deep as it was in the pot. Planting too deep will cause the stem to rot. Watering only in the morning cuts down on blackspot problems. I don't spray my roses EVER, and Don Juan looks great. If you don't want a climber, there are probably some true red tea roses that will do on their own roots, and may be bushes, not climbers. I'm sure that Dr. Manners can suggest some. Also, if you would like a white rose, John Paul II is THE best performing grafted rose in my garden. Best Wishes, Avalon

Drift roses do wonderfully in Florida. If you can, get yourself sweet drift. It is by far the best performing of the drift roses. It is ALWAYS in bloom and disease free. Also chili thrips ignore it. Here is a shot of one of my many sweet drifts. It even grows in partial shade. I also highly recommend the sunrosa series. They are similar to the drifts but they are a bit taller in stature and not as wide. Here is a photo of my Red Sunrosa She's pretty much always like this. This one is growing in a large pot in the center of the garden. Theres also the lovely and charmant Soft Pink Sunrosa which is cute as a button. Yellow Sunrosa does well for me too, but is not as prolific a bloomer. Her bloom are more full however. I dont ahve a pic of mine, but I recommend those three. I tried fragrant pink, and Orange sunrosa, but those did not thrive for me.

Tenor Peggy -Do you ever go to Scrivner's nursery in Ft. Myers? They have many 6' tall Belinda's Dream planted in front of the nursery. They are loaded with blooms and just spectacular. They are even tolerating a bit of shade. I can't wait until mine are just like 'em.

Amberroses - Sorry about your Mr. Lincoln. I have 5 and they are all doing very well, even if they are too tall.
I also have Teasing Georgia - it sure is teasing me! Lots of vegetative growth, no blooms whatsoever. I've been told to leave it in the ground for a couple of years to see if it will adapt. I've also been told that it's black spotty.

You know, Alalon, I've never been over to Scrivner's! Crazy, huh? I buy all of my plants via mail order. Does Scrivner's have a lot of old roses? I'm finding most of the old teas and chinas don't need to be sprayed for blackspot here. I did all of that for years when I gardened up north. Do you know there is a rose society in FM? I haven't gone to any meetings lately because they meet on weekends and weekends are kinda busy for me lately.

No, scrivner's carries HT and others on Fortuniana. They have just started to carry some low-growing low-petal count roses and some others that look like older varieties to me. I'm a "rose newbie" and really don't know anything about chinas and old teas, and of course I need to find out. I don't spray either - recently, I was trying to decide whether or not to use fungicide and decided against. Roses with too much BS get moved into more sun, that seems to help considerably.
From where do you mail order your roses? Are they on their own roots?
Ft. Myers is at least a 45 minute drive for me, and with the tourist season here, more like an hour and a half! I REALLY hate being in traffic...
Oh, and I forgot to mention that the climber America is doing very well for me...huge blooms and good repeat.
