Cracked polyresin fountain leak...(pics)

Hi All,

I hope I'm posting in the correct area. I have this fountain http://www.netshops.com/outdoor-living/patio-furniture/patio-accessories/harmonybamboogardenwaterfountain.cfm?source=channel_intelligence&TID=BC045&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=BC045#tabs . It is made out of polyresin and fiberglass. I made the big mistake of letting water freeze in it and it cracked. It seemed like a hairline crack, so I used Marine and Plumbing goop to fix it. Today was the first day I filled it up completely and the goop basically peeled right off, and the crack has gotten worse.

Any suggestions on what product to buy to fix this? Would roof tar work? It's the base/bottom so I don't really care what it looks like. I would just like it not to leak and hopefully be a sturdy repair, as it's really heavy and sometimes I have to drag it a bit.

Sorry, those materials are almost always unfixable. If someone does come up with a fix let me know. I could not bring up your links. Sandy

There has gotta be a glue/fix for every material out there. I refuse to give up on my fountain...

S_dreamer, that's the smart approach...I learn everything the hard way :) I'm making a new one that is a lot bigger and rigged with lights. Mark, I was new when I did this, but it's still holding water and in one piece. Someone else may have a better strategy for filling the voids. I tried some of that stryofoam spray, but it's pretty expensive and very messy. The paper inside the mesh was used to keep too much tufa from filling all the hollow spaces (to keep the weight down). The paper around the reservoir was wadded into balls and wired onto the outside of the mesh to make the surface uneven. In either case, the paper is still in there. Good luck with your project!

Very nice indeed! Have been on the lookout myself for a bird bath and yours is great. I have been toying with putting a bird bath in the backyard but after my cat brought in another little victim last night I just don't think it is going to happen. So I have modified my search from a sparkly new bird bith to a gently used one to plant in. What all do you have planted in there? It looks great. I totally agree, for such a small pond, I have gotten so much pleasure: watching birds splash around, the fish darting, and pond plants grow so fast too! I love sitting on my deck and just watching the pond. I was surprised that more people don't have the metal stock tank ponds, I guess they don't fit into every landscape though. I got my pond from Western Farm Center here in Santa Rosa, CA, which is just a farm supply center, anywhere you can buy livestock feed, chicken coops, or any other farm supply will most likely have stock tanks, but you may have to order the size you want, I did. Mine was $130 before tax, but it was definitely worth it. Digging is one of my absolute favorite blogs, even though I don't live in Texas, it's a great way to visit without having to deal with the heat, humidity, or mosquitos. Another one of my favorites is danger garden, she has an amazing eye for design and she has the same size stock tank as me, she actually has 11(!!) in total in her small Portland yard. Stock Tanks: They're not just for cows! Any way, I am so jealous of your pygmy purple trop. water lily, I really want a trop. too but they are so expensive! I think that's odd because they grow so darn fast. Really I want one of those Victoria amazonica water lilies, now I just need a bigger yard, heheh... But really though, I do want a trop, but I also want something with fragrance, really intense fragrance, and also dwarf, tall order, but if it's out there I WILL find it, Mwahaahhaaha!!! I don't know what color the flower is, because the friend who gave it to me had it in a tiny (1 ft tall, 2 ft wide) pond, so in all the years she had it, it never bloomed. No tags, either. The adventures in concrete continue. I figured out that there is indeed an overflow pipe. It'll need some attention, though, because it's metal and pretty rusted. I've thought about putting a PVC pipe over it as a sleeve -- both to back it up for its eventual failure and to adjust the depth of the pond deeper. But that's taking a back seat to the concrete. Oh, the concrete. So, yes, it's amazing that it wasn't leaking more when we first got into the house. I started picking at some spots in the interior that looked like they were about flake off anyway. Which revealed a patchwork of patches. Chipping away some more revealed layers of paints (thoroseal?), roofing tar (?!), more thin layers of concrete, fiberglass, more tar with gravel...got it all down to a layer that wouldn't come off with a cold chisel and hammer. Ow...my back. I'm soon to the point of finding a way to make it hold water again. I'm coming around to the thought that further layers of concrete covered with "goop" might not be a great idea. I'd like to find a way to put a liner in it, but there are some really large edge rocks that are mortared in that hang over, that would be over the water line. I'll post a picture when I get closer to addressing that issue. I've spent some time pulling out the intake lines and shoring up the "pump house." Turns out, the half-assed mortared walls fell apart as soon as I took the large rock roof off. Holy cow...I had my head under that thing when I took the old pump out! Here's the new set up, with a new bulkhead pipe, extension of the pipe to the waterfall, new electrical outlet and concrete floor: I had to extend the water line that runs up to the waterfall and used a rubber coupling on the existing ABS line to extend it with PVC. Thought about concreting it in (to shore up the pond wall and surrounding embankment), but I think I'll wait until I get a pump attached to make sure it works. I'll soon start trying to make it hold water. I think I've learned the lesson that more layers of concrete might not be a great idea. Putting a liner might be the right call. There will be challenges with some big overhanging edge rocks that cemented in. The liner could go 'over' them, but I wonder if there's a way to tuck the liner in under the edge and have it stay put?

bkbabe, you could try Pond Sheild Epoxy. I have never used it but I did a quick search of the product and found many happy customers. The site below uses the product in fixing a leak in a concrete fountain. I would think you could contact them and see if this same technique is useful in your polyresin fountain. My guess is that it is or will be awful close.

What about the epoxy they use to repair fiberglass boats or the epoxy filler used in repairing car bodies? Those both have to be impervious to water and should hold.

And more on the epoxy front...
I have successfully used QuikSteel epoxy putty (found in the automotive section of Walmart and other places). It bonds to wet or dry surfaces and will even set up underwater. I used it to fix a sizable crack (1/2" wide and 3 feet long) underwater.

It's a little messy. You kneed the dark grey putty together until it's all the same color and a little warm. Then you cram it into the crack. As with all repairs, be sure the crack is as clear as possible. Wirebrush it to rough it up, even undercut the crack a little if you can. If you can get it to bond well, you should be all set. A section of my crack didn't bond well (algae in it, I think) and the putty just peeled off. But the part that did stick, that was the most important, stuck very well!

I've also used it to fix some rust spots around the windshield of my old convertible.

I tried the clay-like stuff that you knead together and it eventually just fell off. I then tried the fiber glass repair kit from the auto supply store--thought I had it fixed, but today I noticed that it is leaking again. Any suggestions?

I had thought of the auto repair supplies, but it looks like that didn't work for you.

The only other thing I can think of might be marine epoxy. We use that for a number of things and it works well. Don't know if it would be a solution for your problem and it may be what you are calling the clay-like stuff that you knead together. You do knead the marine epoxy.

The problem is that it is a hairline crack and most of the materials mentioned are good only for wider cracks. Also the fountain material is very tight molecularly. To get anything to stick to it you have to rough it up. Something you might try: liquid crack sealer for concrete, or a hydroscopic fiberglass or epoxy crack sealer for leaky basement walls.
