Nor'East mini 'Black Jade'

So I've decided to order a couple of mini roses from Nor'East after receiving their catalog earlier this week. But to keep my husband in the process I asked him to pick a few out. He's really big on the reds. I really liked 'Sorcerer' and on Leslie's suggestion 'Love ya Dad'. My husband likes 'Montana' and 'Black Jade'. I'm ready to order all four except I have read several posts saying 'Black Jade' suffers a lot and often from mildew.

Just hoping I could get some thoughts from those who have grown these. Thank you.

Kate, I grew 'Sorcerer' a long time ago, because my old Ch. Dal was named NorthStar The Sorcerer.
Sadly, it mildewed badly for us. And that's back when we were spraying religiously.
Oddly, I don't think Black Jade had that problem here!

Have you considered 'Santa Claus'?? It was really disease-free here, and we even once won Mini King with it.

I've heard that before too, but I've grown Black Jade for six years in a mildew proned area and haven't had any problems. It's a very prolific, healthy plant with flowers that do well in a vase. I give it a thumbs up.

Not in your climate zone so things might be different. BLACK GARNET is a stunning, stunning rose. It has that full thick form thats so unusual in a TH. Color is a deep black red similiar to Black Magic. It just doesn't bloom that much in my garden but I would never get rid of it. Black Magic would be the perfect HT if it had fragrance. Deep rich black red blooms that last quite well in my garden. My favorite HT. (because it blooms much more than Black Garnet). Black Cherry. I just can't say enough good things about Black Cherry. I have four of them. Deep rich red roses with lovely form. Blooms a lot. One of my favorite top five roses, my second favorite floribunda. Great glossy green leaves that always look fabulous. Black Baccara. Another rich deep black red rose. Maybe not to different looking from Black Magic although Black Magic does better for me (more longer lasting blooms). I will add LAVAGLUT which is the deepest red black rose in my garden. My favorite rose and therefore favorite florobunda (I have about 200). The spring flush on this rose is traffic stopping and the blooms last forever. Seriously, they last about two weeks. Never get icked up by too much rain like normal roses. Alas, no scent.

Texas, Rainbows End, Heartbreaker, Cupcake, Gizmo and the Sunblaze roses are by far the heartiest roses on your list for Inland San Diego County. A south facing exposer can get very hot during the summer depending on where you are located. I live up against the foothills north/east of El Cajon and potted roses do not do that well without some afternoon shade. Just a drop down shade (the roll up kind) will do the trick. If you provide your pots with some protection from the direct hot summer sun and lots of water (daily durning the summer) I think any of the roses on your list will do fine. BTW, When you plant roses in pots Do Not put a saucer under them! Letting them sit in standing water is a death sentence. Also the cheaper clay pots are also harmful. Pots should be glazed or heavy plastic. If you want to use unglazed pots then get them big enough to slip a plastic pot into. Its a good idea for wood planters also as they rot. If you get the outside pot large enough you can put mulch around the edges between the two pots. This will help keep moisture around the pot and help keep the roots cool that will eventually fill the pots. If you need protection from water run off on your patio then place an extra large deep saucer (atleast 2" deep) filled with gravel under your pots which will keep the pot from sitting in the water that has drained through. As for a potting soil I perfer the new Kellogs organic mix. Home Depot carries it and it is quite reasonable compared to other organic brands. What ever you use don't settle for a cheap all purpsoe brand if you want your rose to grow well and bloom for you.

Nor'East Miniature Roses carries Starina. Also, I find Minnie Pearl to be my most blackspot resistant. It still can get blackspot in my humid environment, but it does not tend to totally defoliate like most of my other minis do when I neglect spraying.

Does anyone grow Black Jade?

I had Black Jade for about 3 years and just recently gave it away, primarily because I found a mini of similar dark red that I like better (Salute), and I have very limited garden space and have to make tough choices. Black Jade has both good and bad qualities. Strengths are its unique deep black/red coloring and excellent form. It's a top show mini. Mine had fair amount of bloom, but not great. It also blows to fully open very fast and burns in our hot sun. I definitely agree with the above advice to give it part shade. Mine did best when I gave it only morning sun. Salute, which I mentioned above, is just a shade lighter and has good form, though not as good as Black Jade. But its a much better garden rose in my experience. If you show minis or plan to, you picked a good one. Black Jade is one of the best red minis for show.

I suspect if you planted it in a place with little or no air circulation it might Mildew. Mine is planted on the NW side of my house in an area that gets little air except from the air conditioner. It grows and repeats well with very little disease.
Some of them can produce blooms that are almost black.

Yes. That's as I remember it. Very pretty.
Judges out here "dissed" it for having "sunken centers," but I rather liked it. Loved that velvety color.

My black jade was covered in Mildew. It was planted on the east side of the house, got morning sun only for about 3 hours a day... Was right next to the house with no circulation... a combination of lack of sun and lack of air had the poor thing practically white...

I would have bought another and planted it elsewhere, but I don't like the yellow stamens when it opens...

Black Jade has been a beauty here in my coastal garden, with no particular disease problems. In hotter, drier areas the blooms are redder, not as dark.

Kate, an intelligent lady like yourself will certainly order the two varieties your husband chose ;-)
