I was amazed at how some Star Lily Glads multiplied in their first year! Finally found the shriveled old bulb on the bottom of new one after they dried and twisted them off. I don't think they should be divided after only one year, correct? A few have side cormlets that are almost an inch from bottom to tip. Will those little side cormlets bloom in addition to the main new bulb? I'm assuming they need another year or two to develop internal bloom baby and then I divide them. The only reason I had the bulbs in my hot little hands because they had to be dug up since I was rearranging the bed for next Spring. I wouldn't even have known about twisting off the original corm if I hadn't read this forum. Thanks!

A 2-3" layer of mulch will protect the soil in winter, and it looks attractive, too. You can either use shredded leaves or for a more formal look, hardwood mulch purchased at a gardening center. Mulch is very very beneficial and highly recommended.

You would probably have better results sowing in pots - pots deep enough to leave the seedlings intact in their seed pot until they die back their first fall, then take out the small corms, store to plant in Spring in a Z6 Sow covered by 1/4" @70-75F for germination in 20 - 40 days

Growing bulbs in containers is really quite simple. Unless prechilled and wanting to force into bloom earlier than normal, spring flowering bulbs get planted at the same time as they would in the ground. And keeping them cold and dark is good.....just do not allow the pots to freeze. They also need no water during the winter months but the potting soil should be just moist to the touch. If the soil appears too dry (it shouldn't), just dump a few ice cubes on the pot. Watering them is what would cause any rotting. When it becomes closer to bloom time, you can move the containers outside so the foliage can grow with some bright light and the plants can set their flower buds.
