For me it's to take pictures of all my roses both the bloom and the bush.

The other is to plot and plan every new bed.

I'm with you on the picture-taking, stanc. I was surprised to find out how few I took this year--don't know why--I just didn't. I also promise to improve this coming season.

I dont know how you did all that, you must packed 1000 baggies. I feel overwhelmed just packing up 30 or 40 for a seed swap (and they're all going in the same envy)! Have fun and enjoy your time? K? Lots of people are going to be checking yor want list.....

Thanks, all of you. I should have clarified that I have two really red seedlings of Knockout. The other has a HT form and is slightly darker red, slightly fragrant, repeats (and bloomed the first year). The climber has no fragrance whatsoever and I suspect it will be a once bloomer. Here's a pic of the two together: This is the HT form KO seedling: and here's the flowers of it (Knockout x Oklahoma): I have no clue who the pollen parent is to the climber. I've noticed that the flower petals curve out ('high centered'), whereas the petals on the other remain straight. These are more pics of the flowers of the climber: Basically, I chose those two to continue to work with in future breeding work and I'm not messing with Knockout itself anymore.

I'm kinda glad to hear that I'm not the only one who was disappointed with the garden this past year. This year was my worst year for tomatoes (5 years in my current location). And many tomatoes were splitting on the vine, BEFORE they started to ripen. Ironically, I planted some "Sub-Arctic plenty" tomatoes, and these little buggers produced far more than I ever thought they would. First, they are determinate, so I expected to get a harvest, and then have to pull them and replant that spot. However, they didn't stop producing until just this past week or so. As soon as I thought they were done, they put out a whole new batch of blossoms, and went back to producing again! This happened FOUR times, which, is quite unusual (I believe) for determinate tomatoes! These were my best producing tomatoes this summer, by far! I plan to put them in again next year, just to make sure I get a tomato harvest (colder weather doesn't seem to bother them as much).

I know this is an ancient post, but I want to just jump in for the benefit of any archive researchers and say that as of 2020, Benjamin Moore is still offering the 880 White Zinfandel as part of its Classics Collection. It tends to lean toward mauve, and it's a decidedly dusty pink pastel tone when on the walls. For someone wanting even a more subtle pink, try Benjamin Moore's White Opulence 879 (also notated as OC-69 in some places). The White Opulence appears white in some lights but gives off a tinge of pink in other lights. I'm considering it for an open-space living area where as the original poster so aptly described, it's hard to come to a decision between male/female perspectives on the color for the living areas. I'm also struggling to match a fresh pink color with natural cherry wood cabinetry that will be in the area, and the White Opulence is not so pink that it clashes with the cherry wood orange leaning, yet it also accommodates the red decor we have around the corner from the kitchen.

I wish I were more comfortable with a camera! I ought to take pictures as well, but I don't. Amen to what Jeri said, and I wish I saw a lot more pictures of whole plants. Rose documentation, if that's what the photographer is after, ought to include buds,leaves, prickles, plant. Of course, shots of lovely flowers aren't bad either.

I promise to take more "before" photos. Piece by piece, we are making this property into a rose garden, when it used to be overgrown pasture and brambles ... sometimes I forget to document the original state of things until it's too late.

I promise to concentrate more on photographing my roses as elements in the garden, not just for their pretty faces.

I also promise to be better about weeding. We have some sort of creeping weed that sneaks into my beds and tries to take over. It's easy to pull out when it's small, but it becomes a carpet if ignored.

In these troubled economic times, I promise to do my part in helping the small independent rose nurseries by ordering and ordering often.

I promise to be patient, give a plant a couple or three years before moving or shovel pruning it.

I promise to lavish as much digital attention on the plain janes as the grand dams.

I know what I need to promise, like slowing down my rose purchases, but it's hard, I only have 16 this spring from vintage coming that I ordered last nov.
I believe I will have to pass chamblees next week going from Shreveport to Shawnee, ok. I am trying not to look, because I will be loaded, and have to sleep with the roses until I got them home. Actually I sort of promised myself already no more until at least spring, even though it feels like spring today.
The more I plan something, the easier it is for me to procrastinate, impulse is the only way I ever accomplish anything.

I promise to mulch my roses to a fare thee well so that I'll need to water less, since water in our area has become such a precious commodity. (Thank goodness, it is raining right now.)

I promise not to prune unless it becomes absolutely necessary. This is an experiment on my part after reading the article about pruning on the Vintage Gardens website. I can't wait to see how the bloom will be this spring with no pruning.

I promise to be patient, patient, patient, and not judge my roses until they've passed the three-year mark.

I promise to chill out and enjoy my roses. I'll stroll by Darlow's Enigma and say "take your time, I can wait 3 years before you do anything" and Lions'Rose and say "I'm sure you'll be a nice little shrub someday" and Coffee Country "someday you'll be a big strong girl and not succumb to all this blackspot". A paragon of patience, relaxed, smiling... oh yeah that'll be me this year!

Somehow I don't enjoy quietly enjoying my garden; I have to be working in it, or conducting a tour of inspection. I feel like the leader of an army of barbarians, or the queen of a vigorous young nation: at the very least, an explorer in the Congo basin. Quietly enjoying the garden!?!? HA!! linrose, I'm laughing at myself, not you: we all have our own way of delighting in our small kingdoms.

Melissa, you and I are the same. I am not able to just sit and quietly enjoy my garden. I read a great essay some years ago - perhaps by Diane Ackerman? - of a woman who dreamed of making a meadow, and walking through it in full bloom in a white dress and straw hat. She worked like mad for two years - meadows aren't easy - and finally had her perfect moment. That was it. She was bored by the meadow, and began planning what she would do next!

I've often wondered how long I will volunteer in the Sacramento cemetery. The answer is, so long as it is interesting, and there is something new and creative to do. On a very good Saturday, I have Sheriff's crew members working on irrigation, repairing brick plots, and weeding or spreading mulch in various spots in the rose garden, while we volunteers are deployed caring for the roses. Leader of an army of barbarians? Well, yes, almost literally. And delighting in my kingdom, absolutely.

What do I promise to do this year? Hmmm. Labeling my photos would be a good thing. I take the pictures, but then have to spend hours finding them. Getting a system in place so that I can find them readily would be very, very good.
