I had the HF halogen underwater lights. They worked for awhile but the bulbs burn out about a month or so of use. The problem was due to water condensation on the bulb connectors. The light was turned off in the morning and when cooled, tiny water vapors inside the chamber corroded the connectors.

I have used solar, underwater and rock lights on outside of pond.

I like the solar lights because there are no wires and they are easy to move around, but they do not give off much light.

My under water lights worked for the first year, I removed them during the winter and replaced bulbs, worked at first and then they stopped working, the whole inside was corroded. Must not have sealed right when I replaced the bulb. These where colored and looked nice with one focused on water fall and the other under the fountain looked real nice at night.

My rock lights give off a lot of light but I am limited as to spacing them. But the nice things about them if they fit right in and do not look like lights.

I use both my solar rights and rock lights to light my pond, I gave up on the underwater lights.

What are rock lights......and where can I get them?

I also use solar lights and the look very nice but aren't very bright just got a rock light a few days ago and pointed at the waterfall and it's beautiful.. got it at jerry's home improvement center for about 30 dollars, I have also seen them on ebay.

I have the underwater lights from Harbor Freight and really like them. When the bulbs burn out I just buy replacement bulbs from Lowes.

Lowes also has the rock lights for outside the pond. I believe the set has 3 or 4 lights for about $80.

I have a few of the noma moonray type garden lights around the pond. They don't really light up the water, but look nice lighting up the plants that surround the pond (lamium, holly, hostas, clematis).

If you try an underwater light I don't think you'll regret it. I have one under my (small) waterfall and the light shines upward, even reflecting on the wall of the house nearby with a wavy sort of effect. Plus, I think there's the bonus that an underwater light causes more bugs to drowned in the water, hence more food for the fish.

Another light I have (though don't use all the time) is a tiki torch about 8 feet away from the pond. As it's sort of higher up, you can see the reflection of the flame at night on the top of the water.

Underwater lights are nice, especially when they lightening up the waterfall.

I wouldn't think of going WITHOUT underwater lights.
I LOVE 'em. My favorite is aiming one straight up under a waterfall. The effect is gorgeous.
BUT, I have learned to silicone every fixture thus adding sometimes years to the fixture. Even more expensive lighting choices never last as long as you'd like.

I use 12 low voltage. In the pictures linked below you will see the night effect. I use tulip lights around the perimeter and one 20 watt submersible under the falls. I also have 3 20 watt halogen in the stones shooting across the pond.

I use cheapo solar lights around my ponds, they just light up the plants with a soft glow. And I have 1 HF submersed light shining up on my falls - I love that one! 2 years, same bulb, no problems (so far), but silicone is a great idea, I'll try that when I have to change the bulb.

I bought a light from harbor freight and it was really pretty lighting up my waterfalls. I would have been better if it had lasted more than 3 weeks! Just my bad luck. I had an electrician friend check it out and he said the transformer was toast. Oh well I guess I couldn't expect much for 9 dollars. Might try again next year.
