Carefree Sunshine
Comments (8)Correction: Carefree Sunshine is NOT a David Austin rose. It is a Radler rose. Nevertheless, it is a tough one. I wouldn't worry about the zone being marked 6-8. Don't think it would be any problem for you. Usually the zones are of more concern in terms of how much cold they can withstand. If you want another lighter colored, very disease-resistant rose, try Easter Basket. I think it has much prettier blooms, and I love the blended colors and how they often change. It might only get 3-4 ft tall, however, so maybe that would not work for you. Comments (4)That could be Seil and Michaelg. I have another type of rose bush planted in between the two Carefree Sunshines and it is blooming up a storm. I have flowers in that area but not to close that they would interfere with either CS and the flowers are growing and blooming good also. I'll try to be patient...lol.... Thanks! Most of the bands I've planted bloomed very well the second year so it threw me off base when these two are hardly blooming at all... Comments (4)Sammy, Hermosa will get about 4 feet tall in the south but it takes a little time. Mine blooms in flushes with the odd bloom between flushes. My Comtesse du Cayla is over 5 ft tall and just as wide. Beautiful shape to the bush and healthy as can be. The blooms blow very fast but there are always so many of them that it doesn't matter. Mine blooms literally all of the time. Mme. Joseph Schwartz didn't like it here and suffered with PM very badly every spring and blackspot in the summer so I dug her up after giving her years to straighten out. I don't have the others. Comments (16)Mine were planted on 40" centers. Unfortunately for me, in light of where they were planted, since they showed their billowing, arching habit their first year and continued the pattern there after, they were removed in their third year. They never had the time to reach their full size potential for me. For your climate, I would imagine planting them on 4' centers would give a continuous hedge look where they interlock at their perimeters. I would go with 5' centers if you want them just touching/encroaching a wee bit into their neighboring Carefree Beautys. Now, in my zone 5/6 garden, my 40" center planting would probably have meant the bushes would just grow into each other a bit by each season's end. I would not go as close as or closer than 3' centers. A Floridian who grows Carefree Beauty could give more perspective on your question....See Morealameda/zone 8/East Texas
