Wow Jess, Where to begin??? I think my favorite magazine is Garden Ideas and Outdoor Living by Better Homes and Gardens. It is about everything not just roses. Country Gardens is also great. I get Fine Gardening and Gardening Design and they are nice also. The only one I really am diasppointed in is The English Garden. Interested in seeing other peoples choices so I can check out some new ones. Great question!!! Judy

Im dissapointed in alot of magazines though.. Though all of them are fun to scroll through in terms of pictures. But content can be short sometimes.

Pretty petals, I never subscribed but Ive picked up a couple of The English Gardens and I always thought they were a step up over mags like birds and blooms.

The quarterly specials from Better homes and gardens are usually pretty fun to scroll through, Alot of Eye Candy in it anyways. You can pick up tips just by looking at the pictures.

There is a New England Mag, Peoples , Places and Plants magazine, sometimes you get a very uncanny issue dealing with actual plants, other times its dissapointing.

You can see where im going with my thread probable, I like to know what genus, where they generally come from, some history to the plant, how it was used by the people who brought it, how it is used today, general bloom period, time etc...

The March issue of Martha Stewart Living has lots of good stuff on roses this month. I like the gardening articles in that mag, but my favorite is Southern Living. Especially because it's relevant to my zone.

The only magazine I've subscribed to since its inception is Garden Gate. They offer a free subscription to a relative or friend when you renew, so it's a way to give a free gift. They have a lot of great info plus they don't advertise, so the magazine it's pure info.

Something a little off the normal gardening magazine radar screen is "The Journal of Japanese Gardening" recently renamed "Sukiya Living". Although its focus is Japanese gardening, it always seems to have an article on some topic or technique that can be used in other styles of gardening.

The vast majority of US gardening publications are targeted at a national audience. This is a very expansive country with many zonal variations and intrazonal anomalies. Consequently, I find most (if not all) garden mags to be too far general to be of any value. They invariably have lots & lots of very pretty illustrations, but precious little that relates even marginally to my gardening conditions (or my bank account).

The magazine with the most info I have found is Backyard Living. I also like some of the british garden magazines like BBCs Gardeners World. I always buy the garden magazines Better Homes and Gardens put out, my fav is Garden Ideas and Outdoor Living. I too like Garden Gate, but Backyard Living gives me more info. Last month Backyard Living did an article on garden dirt. I like garden magazines that offer hands on garden advice, readers ideas, etc.. instead of just showing page after page pictures of pretty gardens.

I totally agree with veelakin.
For that reason, I like the magazine that buford mentioned ... Southern Living, which is tailored for my region. Only a portion of the magazine is for gardening, but that's no problem because the remainder of the magazine also interests me.

i quit subscribing to garden mags. not enough real info in articles, if you like lilacs, buy lilac book, etc.
On the back cover of fine gardening mag, they have a picture they call captivating combinations. if you don't live in zone 11, don't even try them unless you will be treating as annuals and replacing every year. for the conditions it always gives, full sun,moist, well-drained soil. lol. why don't they just say perfect. i think a lot of the pictures are staged, plants are probably just in pots shuffled around until it looks good.

My favorite is National Roses Canada which publishes every other month. The editor is Harry McGee and it features some very informative and interesting articles on roses in general. Sure, its main aim is as a Canadian national publication that is focused on Canadian rose growers and Canadian rose related issues, but the publication has many U.S. subscribers too, including some of the more well known and knowledgeable (in my estimation at least) posters on this particular forum.

Where else can you find such detailed articles in every issue, such as the contributions last year from Dr. Felicitas Svejda, mother of the Explorer roses, discussing in depth, the history and details around the breeding program and specific details about each Explorer rose.

For $22.00 Canadian per year and roughly the same for U.S. subscribers, this is the best value for money for any rose specific publication and certainly the most informative and interesting.

I like Country Gardens and Garden Gate. Another favorite is Rosamundi, the quarterly publication put out by the Heritage Roses Foundation.

No, they don't have lots of photos typically. Usually there is a featured colour rose bloom on the cover and then there might be a few coloured pics inside the edition to support one of the articles.

Please note this is not a magazine or high gloss type publication. Its main purpose is for information sharing and updating on initiatives that interest rose growers in general, but particularly those in Canada. It is a low tech publication that comes our every two months, but that is extremely well written and has exceptional regular contributions from its various members and guest writers.

The 2007 publications were particularly informative with the articles by Dr. Felicitas Svejda regarding the Explorer breeding program, the specific details around each rose and some thoughts on the future of rose development.

I'm mentioning this only so you understand the nature of the publication and aren't expecting some sort of magazine type publication with a wealth of glossy photos.

And, Carol, if you fancy it, you can order all of the back issues. Before it became Roses-Canada, it was called The Rosebank Letter. You may even be able to get those.

I'm glad you asked the original question, because it got me to remembering. And I haven't bought a gardening magazine in several years. The last general ones I've bought were the ones that had Steve's rose garden in Atlanta and more recently Barb's rose garden near St. Louis.
I do have a subscription to Roses-Canada and read it with great joy. About a decade ago I bought a life membership in the American Rose Society, so I will receive those now bi-monthly magazines as long as I live.

What takes the place of rose photos for me are the old gardening magazines and books that I download from google.books. The content of the old ones put perspective on our gardening problems and indicates that some plants have stood the test of time (and many haven't.)
A recent find was the downloadability of the Massachusetts Hort Society and the magazine The Horticulturist.
(Anyone else interested in heirloom cantalopes?)
