Like Kiwinut says, I think it is normal. I have sowed seeds of Hort16A (Zespri Gold) and here you can see how red the leafs are: Actually, they are a lot bigger and the red colour has disappeared.

Dzitmoidonc - YES! I found a photo and it matches perfectly. Whew! This morning I looked at it again and convinced myself it was a poison ivy or poison oak or some kind of poison something. And the squirrels in our neighborhood are NUTS (ha!) for those big walnuts, they drag them around all over the place. Mystery solved. Yay! Thanks everybody!

Agree - likely they were transplanted into soil that was still far too cool. Always a good thing to check your soil temps first as they are so much more important than air temps. ;) Once the soil temps warm up they will likely bounce back with new growth. The damaged leaves will probably dry and fall off as they can no longer photosynth. Dave

Hi Musicgirl. This indeed looks like a seedling from your Bloodgood tree. I'm assuming that this is the only seed bearing maple nearby. The actual Bloodgood tree is grafted to make sure you get an exact copy/characteristic they advertise. There is a huge quantity of seedlings sold each year. Just beware that seedling are like children, most are different from there parents. I have one in my front yard that is a lighter shade of red and tend to turn greener toward the summertime. New patented varieties normally come from seedlings or limb mutations. I say take care of the seedling and see what it developes into. Good luck, Bill
