There may not be as many options as you would like. Here in Los Osos it is a hot day if we make it into the 70's during the Summer and we are often fogged in totally with temps in the 60's. What is classed as "early" by mainstream growers may not ripen here until late summer and those which are classed as "late" will simply never ripen--not enough heat units. I'm not all that familiar with the climate in Eureka, and it's probably colder in the Winter, which is a good thing for chill, but you need to be realistic and remember that "early" or "midseason" could easily mean "late" in the area. "Late" could mean "never". It would be helpful to talk to others in the immediate area to see what has worked for them. Microclimates, heat pockets, south-facing exposures, etc., can all be helpful, but sometimes the selection of what will actually work is not that great.

I am in Mongomery County, MD, approx 30 min to NVA border. I tried the following, Blush Noisette, Madame Alfred Carrier, Crepuscule, Jaune Despres, Celine Forrestier. Blush Noisette and MAC were hardy enough for my zone. They both got defoliated from BS, but still kept growing and blooming. Out of theses two MAC was my favorite, always one of the first roses to bloom, great fragrance, good in a vase and just so delicate and rewarding. I lost my big MAC plant (10x10) to RRD disease and still fill sorry. I was willing to tolerate its summer nakedness for its wonderful spring display. Blush Noisette, was OK, but really not resistant to BS. I gave it away. Celine Forrestier, really loved flowers on this one. I tried it twice, one time grafted on Multiflora and one time own root. Grafted plant survived two winters, but was going down in size, not up. Eventuall it died. Own rot died in its first winter. Of all Noisettes this one was the most beautiful to my eye, but also the most succeptable to BS. Jaune Desprez - didn't survive its first winter here. Crepuscule, was growing and blooming well. This one is quite healthy. It survived fine several winters with significant dieback, but still OK. When it was already big plant (4-5 years), it suddenly didn't wake up for me in spring. I believe the main issue with Noisettes here is the temp. fluctuations. They are oK when the winter is cold (like this year), but often we have winters when really cold temp can follow by 60s. These roses never go completely dormat and these temp swings promote them to wake up. Next freeze period can kill them. Olga

Jaqueline, here is some local information: there are more than a dozen Pernetiana rose cultivars that thrive in the S.F.Bay area, -at Morcam Parks old rose garden (corner of olive and Oakland ave. If you stand at the NOrth side of the Victorian rose circle bed, (in the center of the Old Rose Garden, where Mme. Ernst Calvat is planted on 6' tall poles, the main Pernetiana bed will be in the N.E. corner bed, and Talisman on the N.W. bed to the left. -Morcam is a no-spray garden by official vote. These are thriving there, and blooming normally, with little blackspot. These do get P.M. but not enough to defoliate or reduce blooming. 'Talisman' 'President Herbert Hoover' my favorite climbing Pernetiana for its delicious fragrance, which I've grown in Emeryville, in my organic rose garden. 'Gruss an Coberg' very floriferous and fastest re-bloom of this group. 'Mari Dot' There are c. a dozen other Pernetiana roses planted there. I would reccomend most Pernetiana roses within a small microclimate in the Bay area, where temperatures are rarely high enough for blackspot to spread. This includes all the areas within 3 miles of the s.f. Bay. From Hayward to San Jose, blackspot might be more of a problem, but not for you. The only Pernetiana I would not reccomend for you, is 'Lundys Lane' which defoliated c. 20% of its leaves, from blackspot despite being sprayed with Cornell in Emeryville, where I live.
