That's one large fish egg. Do you have a koi?

I do not have koi - I have shabunkins and sarcassos. I've moved that egg plus a new one into my floating island so that fish can't eat them. There's about an inch of water on the top of my floating island so its still in water - not sitting on the dirt. I'll keep an eye on it.

Is the shell kind of soft? It looks similar to a snake or turtle egg, but those would be in dirt, not water??

That's a scary thought. I'd probably get rid of it. I know turtles lay eggs in the sand for the most part, and most of them have oval shaped eggs (same with some snakes), that looks completely round. It could also be a lizard egg. Remember that not all eggs are fertilized though. It could be a dud. If you pick it up, and cup it in your hand in a dark room and shine a flasklight under it (don't touch or heat up the egg), you might see what is growing inside of it, or at least a dark or red spot where the embryo is.

its definitely round - not oval. and i don't know what lizards we would have here in ny. its got to be something that would lay eggs in water because thats where I find them floating. i might try the flashlight trick tonight if the rain slows and i can get outside.

nope doesn't look like apple snail eggs

There are other reasons that it can end up in your pond other than them being laid there. I think salamanders lay eggs in water.

Maybe snapper couldnt get out of pond to l;ay egg.Like chickens ,birds sometimes they just drop an egg.It looks like turtle.

looked at the snapping turtle egg pix I could find - that is a possibility. The info says it likes to live in shallow ponds which I do have - but I have never seen a turtle here. It also says they like to eat fish which is a definite no-no for my pond. It says they like to burrow in the mud but I have a really clean bottom on my liner pond. I'll just have to keep watch to look for a turtle, and to see if the eggs hatch, and what I get.
