There are several quite dwarf cultivars, C. sericea 'Kelseyi' being one of the smallest........it seldom exceeds 3'. And just as there are wide variations in height/size of the various cultivars, there is a wide variation in the degree of stem color. FWIW, stem color tends to be less distinct during the growing season and with the most intense color in winter or while the plant is dormant. There are also shrub dogwood (C. sericea or alba) cultivars that have green, gold or orange stems - not all are red.

Fall color doesn't seem to be a noteworthy feature of this one - I'm not seeing it mentioned at all even in commercial literature. If you're seeing poor color on other C. stolonifera in your region, probably best not to count on it from 'Farrow'. Here is a link that might be useful: Cornus plant named `Farrow`

At the risk of being chastised, because this is after all a seed sowing forum and seed sowing is fun, you'd get new red twig dogwoods much quicker if you got cuttings from your uncle. They are incredibly simple. Just stick some cuttings in the ground and forget them. They grow as easily as willow and forsythia.

I've always wanted to try one. Occasionally I see them offered, but have resisted the temptation. I am afraid to invest much space to more northerly suited plants, but that doesn't mean I haven't already! I do have a 16 year old Colorado Blue Spruce and 12 year old Dwarf Alberta Spruce. I gave them a chance and they have performed as well as can be expected, which would most likely be the case with the colored twig dogwoods. They could probably survive here, but they would never be as nice as their northern grown relations. My honest opinion would be to plant a couple, but not tie up a lot of real estate with all five.
