Pegging Bourbons in hot, dry, windy climate

I want to peg my bourbons for the first time this year, but I'm not sure if I should self-peg or peg to the ground. My decision is complicated by the fact that all my bourbons are in large pots and the soil here in Tucson can get very hot in the summer. All watering is very targeted so in most cases there isn't any nice cool earth to peg the rose to.

So I will probably self-peg even though this will make them more top-heavy in the wind. Does anyone have any advice on protecting self-pegged roses from getting knocked over?

How do you deal with your bourbons in a hot, dry climate?
