Name That Plant!

Morning Glory Sport ? Spider Type Flower...

Finally have some glimpse of hope from the 15 years of self seeding morning glories that I've been trying to eradicate at our new place... had this morning glory grab my attention as I've personally never seen anything like it. How about You?

I'm 99% sure this is a sport as there is nothing else like it in the garden and the nearest I've ever seen is "split personality" which is red and a totally different shape from memory. I'm going to save seeds off this one for a chance that the seedlings will have the same flower type. I'm considering trying to overwinter cuttings to propagate next spring. Anyone ever purposefully overwintered morning glories??? If that isn't a totally unfitting question for a plant that self-seeds so well that it becomes almost uncontrollable if left alone... lol

Very pretty. I'd tag the bloom and see if it produces a pod. There's several Japanese MG's with split petals and I occasionally have I. purpureas that produce odd blooms. Do seach for Ipomoea nil 'Ishidatami'

The problem might be too much hot wind.I'll recommend you soak this plant in the morning and in the evening-try to water the base of the plant and not get the flower buds wet.Avoid too much fertilizer...MG's bloom better with lower nitrogen.

In the spring I planted six teeny plants I bought from the greenhouse, on a fence line. They have been kept moist, not fertilized, and are in full sun. The soil is black muck. They grew like crazy - I've never seen anything like it. They were pulling down nearby young trees with their weight. Well - it's mid September, and they never bloomed once. As a matter of fact, we had a frost this week, and parts of the vine were killed. So, for no blooms, it will now take me hours to cut all this vine out of the fence and trees and other perennials. Must be a moral to this story, somewhere!

What type of morning glory do you think I may have?

It sure sounds like Ipomoea hederacea...as soon as you can post a photo you will get a more specific answer...if what is growing there is some type of morning glory...all MG's belong to some species whether they are a totally natural strain or a 'highly bred' cultivar of some species...despite widespread misconceptions there are extremely few true inter-specific hybrids of MG's out there anywhere... Joseph - I would consider the flower to be more of a pseudo-windmill because if it wasn't for the factor of the reverse tube in combination with the anthers and / or stigma turning into petaloids (thus making the filaments and style more visible) this would then more simply be a double I.nil...quite unlike the other type of Windmill that Nobu has that is neither double or reverse tube. The Japanese often mislabel their MG's.

Karyn you are right on the base I think... it appears to be mostly purpureas that I'm trying to kill... there are no Japanese style morning glories that I've seen, this doesn't have the hideously mis formed blooms nor the compound leaves, it's almost a perfect spider along the lines of a miniature spider day lily bloom. I think it's kinda neat if I do say so myself. lol
I've already tagged the bloom and it is setting seed had a second bloom today on the same plant that was exactly the same so it's not a one time thing caused by something other genetics. :)
