Andrea: Did you quarantine the new koi? I just found out from Lisa (Goodkarma) that small koi carry ich. I purchased 4-5 inch koi a few weeks ago. They are in a 100 gallon Rubbermaid stock tank in my basement. I gave them 1 week to adjust to the new environment while treating the water for ich, and am now testing them for KHV. I do this by raising the temperature in the tank to between 75 & 80 degrees for three weeks. Then I will lower the temperature to between 60-65 degrees. Once they acclimate to the cooler water I will raise the temperature again to between 75-80 degrees again for three more weeks. Any fish that has KHV will show symptoms when the water temperature is warm. Most of them will die immediately once the temperature is warm enough. My fish have been in the warm water for three weeks this Saturday. I know it's hard not to put them in the pond immediately, but I don't want to endanger my larger koi. They will be quarantined for almost 2 months in my basement before I release them into the pond. Jenny

Yes I agree with sleepless. I have a koi pond with approximately 10 large koi fish. I also have small mosquito fish swimming alongside them. Chances are, a few baby koi will survive, because koi fish do not intend on eating other fish do to their peaceful nature, BUT koi fish will mistake smaller fish as food! When I feed my koi, they oftentimes swallow mosquito fish on accident. If you have a spare tank and a proper filter, you could scoop some pond water into the tank and get it running. To get the babies out safely, I would either patiently try to scoop as many tiny fish I can with a net OR partially drain the pond to the extent where the babies are visible and easy to catch and the parental koi are not stressed about the condition. If you choose to leave the babies in the pond, their only MAIN danger would be being snacked on by their parents, but they will not starve, so feeding is not necessary. Either way, u will loose some babies, but it would be a good experience for everyone. To answer the second question, MOST likely, you will get orange and white colored fish. But if they are sun burnt or are suffering from stress or malnutrition or any other environmental factor, they may slightly change their color tone. Another possibility is that your parental koi fish is carrying a recessive trait (color in your case), and happens to pass it directly to their offspring. In that case, you may get yellow or black koi. I think this will be interesting and I, personally would like to know if they really are koi fish babies or not. coyoteblanc.....the eggs that are turning white may simply not have been fertilized. This happens when the male fish do not fertilize all of the eggs. The sun should not have anything to do with it. I just missed a spawn but managed to pull one of my plants out of my pond and did save a few. Most turned white but I think I have a few hundred that just hatched out yesterday. I would suggest removing the white eggs and just keep an eye on the others. It only takes a few days for them to hatch. If you watch them closely, you will begin to see the "very small" fry form. You will be able to see 2 black eyes inside the egg. After this occurs, it will not be long and you will see the fry. Look closely though. They are tiny, (about the size of you bottom eyelash) and will attach themselves to the side of the tank that you have them in. While in this stage, they will eat on the egg sac for survival and once that is gone, will swim to the top and fill their air sacs. Now you can start feeding them liquid food. If it is too large, they will not be able to eat it and will starve. If you have a food processor, put some food in it and get it to a very fine texture. Add water to it and pore the liquid into the tank. Don't use to much at one time, as it can make your water bad. Feed them this about every 3 hours until they are large enough to eat it without the water. I had a spring spawn and got around 5000 fry from it. I have sold most of them but still have around 300 left. These are just ornamental Koi for my pond. I have since purchased 4 show quality Kohaku Koi. It will be at least another year before they are old enough to spawn and I can't wait. I use spawning mops in my pond when the time is right and usually can collect most of the eggs. I purchased a 60 gallon tub that I hatch them in with plenty of oxygen and (no filter) as it will suck the tiny fry into it and kill them. When they are about 1/2" long, I transfer them to a 650 gallon grow pond. You should have some eggs that are fertile and should hatch. Keep us updated and let us know.
