supplemental lighting

I have 40ish orchids of all types crammed on a wooden stand. The stand has four levels and is approximately 6'L x 4'H x 1'W. The stand is located next to a sliding glass door window that gets southern exposure. The lowest level of my stand is lit,(midnight to 7a.m.), with an overdriven 40 watt T5 unit. To date I'm not really impressed with the results of the T5. I would like to add lighting to the other levels of the plant stand. Because the plant stand is near the large window the plants experience some cool temps. Often the lowest level will drop below 60 degrees. Should my supplemental lighting be in the form of a few CFL's? Can I get by with 23 watt, or would the minimum size be 42 watt? To provide a little more heat should I go with one big honkin sodium vapor lamp? thought that 42 watt CFL's in the 5K-6.5K range would work, but now I'm not so sure.
