string algae snack?

So do koi actually eat string algae? I have two ponds. One is larger, above ground and has my fish. The other is small, preformed in ground and is natural. I have water lilies, tadpoles and unfortunately lots of snails. Not the good kind either, the kind that eat my water lilies. Anyway, I have been trying to gather the snails and feed them to the fish. On a whim tonight, I grabbed some of the string algae from the little pond because it was full of snails and put it in the big pond. The koi went nuts. I don't know if they would actually eat the algae if it weren't full of baby snails though. I would happily put the string algae in my big pond for the fish if they would eat it. However, DON'T want to if all it will do is get a start in my nicer pond. I also have a plecostomus in the big pond. Do they eat string algae?
