It is only for wildlife, not looks. Clover instead of grass, beneficial flowers, herbs, gardens, Sunflowers and trees everywhere. Our yard blooms! I love it:) I collected some berries today. I probably will not make jam, but will plant more trees for the birds. Sometimes the county and power company come along and cut the trees down on that side. On Earth day last year they came and butchered all the trees on one side of our yard. I was very upset! esh_ga, yes it is Nebraska. These trees are staying if I can help it. In fact I am going to plant lots more. We also have tons of Mulberry trees for the birds. They share a few berries with me when I am out in the gardens, lol. abgardeneer, our small acrage is not semi-wild, its Wild! Love it! I even saw some Milkweed pods today. Yes, I agree not moonseed, looks like wild grapes. But since we are talking about eating wild plants, I just wanted to mention the look alike so the OP and anyone reading this post (and we both know there are plenty of those!) would know that not everything that looks like a wild grape might be a wild grape. I personally have never seen moonseed. Grapes, on the other hand... I live in a part of the US known for grapes and wine. Wild grapes grow every place. They are a common "weed" for me to deal with in gardens. Old vines in forests here get as thick as young tree trunks - you could swing on the vines like Tarzan! I would think nothing of using anything that looked like wild grapes. But I'm sure not everyone has the same situation, hence the word of caution. :) FataMorgana

Mark, I'm glad to see you confirming what I and others have said. There's no way that you would remember my name but you and I have had several chats on the phone, the one I remember most was when the parents of Moreton Hybrid were "lost", and then found again. I also remember asking you why they stopped producing Starpak F1, which I loved. I was raised on a farm in Loudonville, NY and in those days, I'll be 73 next month, the Harris "man" came to the house and discussed with my father what was new, and took his order right at the house. When those home visits stopped there was a store in Menands, NY, not far away at the Menands Market, where one could buy Harris Seeds and all sorts of other items from shovels to you name it. So I guess you could say that I've known of Harris Seeds for at least 60 years or so and to date have always been impressed with the quality of seeds, bar none. No order this year b'c I have enough seeds for this year, I think. ( smile) Carolyn ( Male), also pleased that Harris became independent once again after the short term association with Moran Seeds. And also upset that she never got a chance to get your fields in Rochester b'c she spent quite a few years at the Med Center there getting an advanced degree in Microbiology ( infectious diseases) and wishing she could remember the name of one of the larger dept stores downtown that sold THE best cheesecake ever.LOL I think they're gone now ( could it have been McCurdy and____ or something like that, but her love for NY style cheesecake goes on forever. LOL

Citruslover, I will give you my non-expert opinion on an olive tree. Arbequina seems to be recommended quite often for home growing and/or patio growing despite the fact that it is not a dwarf tree. I planted one that was about 5ft tall about a year ago in a half whiskey barrel. It produced probably 10 pounds or more of olives for me this year. It has not grown much taller, but has filled out some. I used miracle grow moisture control potting soil and the tree seems to be as healthy as can be. There is most likely someone else on this forum that will recommend some concoction of soils that is much better suited, but this is what has worked for me. The only problem I have seen was some scale, but I used Insecticidal Soap to keep it in check. Just make sure you bring your tree inside when temperatures get down around freezing and I think you will be fine. From my research it seems they adapt quite well to a decent sized pot, and if necessary, you can prune them back to whatever size you need. As far as fertilization, I dont have much input for you. I know that olives are not very heavy feeders, and I plan on just adding some compost to mine in the spring and seeing how it does. One thing I recommend before you start this endeavor is to research how laborious it is to turn an olive into something edible. You cannot eat them right from the tree as they are very hard and bitter. There are several ways to cure them. I tried brining with salt water and marinating them this year and they came out o.k. but it takes several weeks to brine them with several water changes in between. They also did not all ripen at the same time so I ended up with several small batches that I was changing the water in at different times. One arbequina is that the olives are a little on the small size, about the size of a large blueberry, so if you want great big olives maybe you should look into another variety. The last thing I will tell you is that there is a wealth of knowledge on this forum about these trees and I am quite sure all of your questions have been asked before. You could have probably found all of this information and more by using the search bar.
