trumpet vine management

I have a question about trumpet vines. I received some from a generous fellow gardener but I heard they were invasive. I wanted to know if they could be contained in a container? I was thinking of planting them in a container on my cement patio and having them grow up my fence over my porch. They would be on cement and would grow up over a fence that was on cement. Would they stay contained then? Also are any parts of them poison? I'd appreciate any help with this! Thanks, Linda

the formation of "suckers " is a minor problem & this would be eliminated by growing in a container. Ther real problem is it sets many seed in a rather large "pod" IF you collect these & destroy befor the seed is ripe you will not have any pproblem. The plant is not toxic to animals or humans

It is a nice plant. Worth the extra trouble to collect the seed pods and clip an occasional sucker. After just a few years do some really serous trimming. Go for it.

I had trumpet vine and it was not invasive but I also had silver lace vine and that one went up behind the siding of the house and could have been costly.

Angel Trumpet & Trumpet Vine

I have an Angel Trumpoet vine. I say that because the plant never exceeds the height of 2 feet, yet spreads out as long as 4 to 5 foot branches along my flower bed. The flowers are white and only bloom at night. They make a large beautiful ground cover for a large flower bed or the side of the house. They are poisoness but none of my animals are interested. the trumpet vine is beautiful in bloom and attracts hummingbirds all year long. I've never heard of anyone or any animal being poisoned by one. Thank you.

Campsis radican 'Flava' is the most widely available yellow flowered sort. Mention of the trumpet vine, or trumpet creeper usually brings a storm of comment, because it is so vigorous and invasive. I had a 'Madame Galen' on the chimney before we put an addition just there and had to cut the vine down. Its seedlings are on the property and so deeply rooted that I will always have them. 'Jersey Peach' grows on the pool deck fence and I am gathering and destroying every seed pod before they open. The sort you have is growing very slowly in considerable shade on an out-building I built and may, eventually get into more sun on the roof. Then it may finally bloom and make seed pods for me to chase. I ordered another 'M. Galen' for a rather wild spot and a 'Morning Calm, also growing too slowly in a shady place. Beautiful vines that bloom for a long time, are too vigorous and constantly drop spent flowers in a great mess. A great favorite of hummingbirds.

Just really make sure you're up to the commitment to clip those pods. When we moved into our house 20 years ago, the entire back yard was full of sprouting trumpet vine. It was everywhere, from up the side of the house itself to choking the lilac bush, and all open spaces in between. I have used gallons of Round-up over the years in my efforts to control/eradicate it. It has an extremely deep root, near impossible to just pull, and even if you dig below dirtline and cut it still comes back. I can't for the life of me understand why anyone would want to grow the stuff. I probably have an extreme case gone wild, but I recommend being very diligent in your care of the little monster!
