Bud Blast?

After the first set of flowers finished, I cut back the spike of one of my phals to just above a node as it had already produced two new branches. The lower branch only produced tiny buds which never opened (they turned bright red and dried up), and the higher one produced 4 buds-- one of which opened fully and look fine, two which have begun to open but haven't done so fully, and one which hasn't yet started to open. This phal is also growing a new spike.

I went through a brief period of time where I couldn't get the heat regulated in this orchid's room so it got chilly. I think this has caused the buds to shrivel and the new spike to stall. I'm leaning towards cutting off the old spike completely now and letting the plant devote its energy to growing the new one.

Sound like a good idea, or should I just see what happens now that the heat seems to be working properly?
