Rose identification please.

Now from past experience I know there are (or were) some wizbang flower/plant i.d.ers in this site so, even though I've tried a few rose forums, I thought I'd also give this one a go. I purchased this climbing rose early in the year from a little ole' lady at a local church fete. She'd labelled it a 'climber', which it is, and I planted it to grow up and over a garden arch in company with clematis 'Polish Spirit'. I thought it might have been a Dorothy Perkins, but just yesterday it put out its first flower and it certainly does not resemble a D. P. even though it is similar in growth habit. It has a slight, typically 'rose', scent, though not like David Austin's usual 'tea' perfume. It also seems to be a cluster flowerer and therefore probably a once a year bloomer, however, as this is it's first year I can't be sure. Any suggestion as to id. please.

Thank you mustang49. Yes, I was surprised when it open with such a lovely flower and yet it's just something I picked up at a church fete. I suspect it's an old rose as distinct from later varieties. It has a slightly fruity, I guess I'd refer to it, scent and is developing clusters rather than single buds. As for it's name I'll just have to keep searching but there's so many similar flowerers.

Yasitha, I am admiring your roses, particularly the dark, velvety one. It looks like some stripes are emerging on one petal. It reminds me of some rare stripe roses that are sports and often revert to the non-striped form. The blooms on these roses are usually pretty small. Take a look at HMF (Help Me Find Roses) search for striped roses. Check out Simsalabim (hope I've spelled that correctly). Another neat one is Memphis Music. I think Diane nailed it with Lion's Fairy Tale. I just looked at all of the pics of it on HMF, and many (not all) showed the same unique substance to the petals that I noticed from your pics. Kudos to Diane for her great sleuthing :-D

I'm sorry Remy, I don't know what happened there, hopefully I've been able to replace it. By the way, I was continuing my search today and I think I might have found it: In Botannicas Pocket Roses book is 'Renae', described as, 'A modern, cluster-flowered, medium pink, repeat flowered climber, etc.'. I'd be interested to hear what you and others think.

Well, I have not see Renae in person. It does seem to be a popular rose in Australia. On HelpMeFind, two of the photo donors are from there. But it is polyantha climber. You can tell by the long thin leaves. Your leaves seem a bit too rounded for it. Click on the link below. One page has the description, one has photos so you can compare.
It is difficult to figure out a pink climber by one photo. You need close up pics of the canes, buds, measurements on the flower diameter and petal count, etc. You also need to know for sure if it is once blooming or a repeater.

Yes, the petal count on 'Renae' is 43 according to Botannica, my one is half that number, but when I roughly count those in the photo in the (Botannica) book, they also fall a lot short of 43. Also the buds do not look the same. Anyway, I'm not so much a 'purist'; it is a lovel flower so I'll see how it progresses through spring and summer and see if it repeat it's blooms. Thanks for your comments.
