SE La., at roadside, ID?

This isn't flowering, but there are distinguishing characteristics.

Plant is about 2 ft tall. Leaves at base of stem are a foot long. Leaves get smaller up the stem. They're alternate. At the top of the plant, which I scanned, they're 2-3 inches long, then that somewhat tight clump of leaves at the top where the bases practically overlap.

The leaves are lighter on the upper side and don't seem to be visibly hairy, but they feel very smooth, silky, kind of papery. No leaf stem. They seem partly wrapped around the plant stem where they attach, and there's a little bump there, visible in the picture as a little light colored spot.

No flower buds forming that I can see.

The overall look is almost like a big liatris, but I've never seen one with the weird smooth papery feel or this big around.

Really like to know if this is some neat wildflower, as I'll dig a few out of the roadside. It isn't real numerous, but there are several dozen. It gets mowed so I may never see it bloom.
