Great Lakes Roses update

I received this from Nancy Lindley at Great Lakes Roses today.

She says;

"I'm sorry to report that the sale didn't "go thru". So, if any of your contacts have always wanted to buy a rose nursery, this is their big chance! Otherwise, we're starting to sell off the equipment and will probably list the property with a real estate agent soon. So, at this time, it looks like this will be the last year for Great Lakes Roses.

We're going into the season with an excellent inventory of nice large plants. We didn't propagate in 2007, so all the plants we're selling are at least two years old!"

It seems like these small nurseries are dropping like flies lately. Is this just a coiincidence, or is there a trend happening that i'n not aware of? Maybe all we'll be left with in a few years will be the big corporations. I certainly hope not. donna

The Lindleys have had this nursery for years and, like many of us as we get older, are retiring. Rather than close they were looking for a buyer to take over and continue. Not many of the younger qeneration are willing to do all the work running a nursery requires or can handle the investment. That plus rising property taxes and heating costs makes it hard to make a profit or live on the income without holding down another job. Michigan Mini Roses, just down the road from them, closed a few years ago for the same reason.
Interested? For about $600,000 you can buy the business, property, inventory, and the home.

Karl, thank you for your quick response. It is such a shame that Roger & Nancy are leaving. I am happy for them though they deserve a great retirement. Hopefully someone soon will step up to take over the business. It will definitely have to be a person who is committed and truly in love with the roses as Nancy & Roger are. Great Lakes Roses is truly a labor of love. Nancy is well known in the Ann Arbor area, she also sold roses every Saturday at the Kerrytown open market. Many of my neighbors have bought her roses there. So, Karl? is there a possibility you may step up to the plate & take over operations? I'd volunteer my time if you did! Have a great day:) Betty

I did get lost in it! It was huge! about 200 packets! I will get it out in the mail today or Wends. Today if I hear from you sue per our emails.... Thanks for including me in this it was LOTS of fun. I have never tried hardly any types of annuals before - but I have a garden walk scheduled and hope they really brighten up my yard. I will be trying lots of them this year thanks to your help. Thanks for showing me the way to affordable gardening. I am a new seed addict now. Have 9 flats going now and I ran out of room, but not seeds. Trying to talk hubby into building me a coldframe for my birthday next month so I can start more seeds. thanks again

My family has a "camp" on lake Champlain and originally it had the pine paneling and wood floors, to me it was the epitome of a vacation lake house. It reflected the natural setting so perfectly, was low maintance and had a wonderfully fun campy feel. In the 90s it was updated, with a white kitchen, painted wood work, and drywall walls. It is now "light and bright" but feels like every other home in the states. I no longer find it a reprieve and it has lost that authentic lake camp feel. I was still in college and had no ownership in the property so no say but how I wish they updated it with just new furnishings and keep the original vibe of the "camp". I covet your beautiful camp!

for the windows, I'd consider just getting the arches drywalled over if you can afford it (if you think you get enough natural light with them currently covered up). the problem is that due to the ceiling angles, you can't put a curtain rod above the arches. and those "fan" shaped blinds are so dated. unfortunately this is kind of an expensive solution. regarding your question about the gold fixtures in the bathroom. originally I suggested updating the vanity for now, but that's before I saw the shower. I'd reno that whole room if I could. but if you really can only do some temp fixes for now: I stand by my suggestions from above (small fixes to improve the vanity area). in addition: take that shower door off, patch the holes in the acrylic surround, and install a nice shower curtain. it'll be an instant update, and hide what's going on in the shower. as for all the brass: there are many designers here who think mixed metals are fine. if you updated the vanity area, I think it would work fine.

This is very sad. I'm really going to miss them. It was always a treat to make a trip to the nursery in the spring to see all the roses and make my choices.

I had just given their name and information to a high school buddy (just caught up with him through Classmates) as a source for good roses - cause he lives in that zone.

I am very concerned about the number of nurseries going out of business.

Thanks for letting us know what is going on. I might be in touch with you Karl to get some roses if I can decide what I would want. It's sad that they can't find anyone to take over the nursery.

They have some great roses on their web but too bad they won't ship. Detroit is too far for me to drive from Peoria.
