Using recycled containers?

Can you tell me if this sounds like a good plan for germinating/replanting? I have loads of egg cartons I'm planning to use for germinating, but when I need to replant, I was hoping to use recycled containers: cut-down plastic half-gallon milk jugs and 32 oz. yogurt tubs, coffee cans, short restaurant containers, etc. Is this feasible? Should I eliminate anything I can't cut down to a uniform size (e.g., coffee cans)? After that, I'd think they'd go into the ground (well, in our case, the containers), right?

If I can use the recycled containers, is there some special way I should treat them or wash them before I use them? Just soap and water? Vinegar and water? Something else? I'd rather not use bleach, but I will if it's necessary here.

What do the experienced seed starters think?

TIA!
