You don't need mosquito fish if you have goldfish. Goldfish will eat the larvae too.

I would start out with three or four. They will multiply. Fast. They also grow fast. Ten mature breeding Goldfish would be too many.

Hey thanks alot for the fast response....I was going to be getting all of my goldfish small prolly around 2-4 inches.....At what size will they start multiplying at???...If i get a couple of Shubunkins, Sarasas, and Wakin, Will they all start breeding with eachother??????...Thats Kool that the Goldies will eat the Mosquito Larva...I can get free Mosquito fish or minnows or whatever they are by catching them at the Local Lake.....My kids love to catch them and play with them so i was thinkin of letting them bring some home to the new pond....How fast can the Goldfish grow....Thanks again...~OG_Raskal

golddish grow fast and breed like rabbits! If you get them this year, there is a good chance some may be ready to breed next year.

Also regarding the fish from the local lake.....don't do it!! Wild caught fish are a great way to introduce parasites to your pond. You could easily bring in parasties that will kill all of your newly aquired goldfish. Even plants from lakes (and other people's ponds) need to be sterilized before putting them in your pond.

To your question, "How many fish can I (keep) in my pond?" The answer is all of them if you have a net and maybe none of them if you don't have a net. In ponding you need to have a sense of humor as well as a lot of Patience. I caught some Blue Gills and put them in my pond, now I am sorry that I did. I plan to take them all out before they start multiplying. It is strange that all (everyone) of my Moors have been found dead, eyeless since I put them in there. I had at least 7. And only the Moors. Don't know what happened, but I had most of them about a year. Glenda

My goldies/shubunkins/sarassa grew from 2-3" to 5" the first year with minimal feeding (once every 3 days). 300ga pond. I have 6, that's plenty. I'm hoping them are big enough to eat their own eggs this year!

I would agree with the others here. Your pond is about 325 gals or less so 6 goldfish would be plenty. That would give them 50 gals of water each which is the minimum that most ponders recommend for goldfish. The Sarassas will grow bigger than the shubunkins. I like my shubunkins because of their long tails and color variations. Goldfish are usually just plain gold. Wakins will also get big--up to 18" in maximum growing conditions. In a small pond they won't likely get anywhere near that size. Oh and goldfish--all varieties are rather fickle when it comes to breeding. They'll do the happy dance with any female fish in the bunch.

I have a smaller pond and I prefer to keep just fancy goldfish because they don't get as big as other fish. They have doubled their number in just three years, though, from 12 to 25, so I wish I'd started with less.

Hey thanks alot guys for all of the Info.....Looks like i will try to keep it at 6 goldfish Max......I have 3 sarassas in there already that i bought from Petco....they are around 3 inches long.....How big do you think these Goldfish will get in my small pond...???....Is my pond around 300 gallons????? It is 6ft long X 4 ft wide and 20+ inches all the way around it....It is shaped Rectangular with the edges rounded off.....My wife said they had some Shubunkins at walmart that were around 4 inches long....I'm thinkin of pickin 1 or 2 of them up today or tommorow...Thanks again guys...~Raskal

I would not add more fish this soon. Let everyone get settled in and your biofilter get going. Adding too many, too fast can really mess up your water chemistry.

When you get new fish, same yourself grief and make sure you quarentine them first before adding them to your pond. But let your pond get cycled first before adding more. You will have more then you want soon enough.

Kool....Thanks Bro....I will hold off buying some more fish....I have well established fish tanks that have been up and running for several years....I put 5 big rocks and a few small from the fish tank and several fake plants from the fish tank into my pond hopefully to speed things up....Was this the right move?????....I also added a few walmart lilies that are barely starting to pop out but i could tell they have grown since i bought them...Thanks for all the help....~Raskal

I agree, wait a bit. In my little pond I prefer to see a few thriving pretty fish than a mass of babies I can only hope to find homes for....

I started with tons of plants and then had to add a second small 275ga pond, a 150ga stock tank and a 60ga veggie filter cause I couldn't see the fish for all the plants! I now have 2 dwarf lilies, 3 anacharis, and ~ 6 or 7 potted marginals in my 300ga pond. My how they grow! But each spring I am tempted to get more...'til they fill in. 'Course plants are easier to find homes for.

PS: Provided your aquariums are healthy I don't see that adding rocks or fake plants can hurt, but the beneficial bacteria in an aquarium may not survive in the 'real' world. Temp flucuations, sun, shade, etc. So I don't know if it'll help either. But I've never done it and I've been known to be wrong :0)
