I don't know. I'm not having the problem you describe. However, sometimes when you have problems accessing a site, it can help to clear your cache. How you do this depends on which browser you are using, Firefox, Safara, Internet Explorer, and so on.

Do they want you going through the main page? I just type in www.gardenweb.com then click on the forums button when I'm there.

As rosefolly said, you probably need to clear your cache. I only know how to do that on Internet Explorer. Maybe this will help you.

To clear your cache on Internet Explorer, go up to the top bar and click on "Tools." Then click on "Internet Options." A box will appear. You need to click on "Delete Cookies" and on "Delete Files" and on "Clear History" and click on "OK" when all that is done.
ONE WORD OF CAUTION: In getting rid of the old cookies, you will lose all the automatic passwords you have set up, so make sure you have listed your passwords somewhere. You will have to re-enter the passwords for all the sites when you try to go into them again.

It's that easy to do. Once you get rid of all the bad old addresses and directions, your computer may be able to access the current address which you will have to type in. The current correct address is http://forums2.gardenweb.com/forums/roses/ .

Sandy, you need to do something very simple, but hard if you don't understand it. You need to empty the cache on your browser. This where web pages are stored that you access frequently. You have the ability to dump all that junk. In your cache is that old page when Gardenweb was temporarily offline. You keep accessing the page in the cache, not on the internet.

In my brower, I can find EMPTY CACHE under the main menu. It isn't even hidden away in a preference. What browser do you use? Let us know....

Well.... my cache isn't the problem, although I DO need to clean it up, because my husband tried to access the gardenweb site with his computer, (with the address I've always been able to use), and he couldn't get into it that way either. The computer he used has never been on the gardenweb at all. (He's an engineer and software specialist - it is me who is the computer challanged one here. I had to ask him what a cache was. Pitiful, huh?).

What he figured out is that to access the gardenweb, I have to type in what happyintexas does. If I type in gardenweb.com I can get here, and then click on the forums. So....they did change something on their site, but that's O.K. I can get in here now. I don't know why I didn't think to try that.

It's also sad how all the old threads are gone now. There was a lot of information available through the search. I miss being able to look it up.

I cannot access the old threads, it is frustrating. Will we ever be able to do that again? Is it everyone who cannot access them.....thought it was just me.

hey guys,

instead of doing a google search, you can just add a "2" after forums in the http address to bring back old posts.

for example, suppose I want to search old posts on "Charles Rennie" - a David Austin rose, but I get an error message.

the http address says:

"http://forum.gardenweb.com/forums/etc.......";

So I just add a "2" :

"htpp://forum2.gardenweb.com/forums/etc....";

And IT WORKS!!!!

I tried adding the "2" and it was giving me the error page. I haven't tried it today though.

At least I can get to the gardenweb again, but I have to type in gardenweb.com and then click onto the forums. Before I was able to jump right into the page.

I save the site as a Favorites(aka Bookmark), then pull up that list, drag the 'address' I want onto my desktop (fancy name for your computer screen), and it creates a little icon I can click to get here.

The old threads are not gone folks, they are there.

At Google enter
site:gardenweb.com thread you are looking for

Where you replace the "thread you are looking for" part with the search term that you want.

Thanks diane nj - I'll give it a try. However, it's a huge pain if you ask me, to have to do that. It was so nice before they messed things up.

Carla and erasmus on the Rose Conversations Forum are also having trouble. At this point Carla is not sure what is going on, but there is a big problem with her getting on the GW.

This will move yours to the top so it can be easily identified.

Sandy, what is your ISP? Do you use Charter like Carla & erasmus?

From what I know with Carla, typing www.gardenweb.com does not work. She gets a 404 error. I had her try going to google also, she clicks the link, & gets the 404.

The only way she could get near GW was clicking on the cached page link on google results, but that's because it's stored on googles site.

Carla can read via a cloaking program, so either GW is bloking her particular DNS server or her DNS server is borked. I have a friend that is helping me.. he does this for a living and knows what he is doing. Hopefully we can get these ladies back on.

Thanks Carla, I'm able to get on now if I type in gardenweb.com. It brings me into the gardenweb site, and then I can click on garden forums to get to all the rose forums. It's not as nice as before, when I could type in gardenweb.com/forums, but it works.

I haven't checked today to see if I can get into searching the old threads yet, but I did see yesterday that the gardenweb put up a notice that they were working on that issue.

Roselvr, we use comcast. I had a lot of trouble initially getting on this site, but as noted above, since I changed my method of logging on, it's been O.K. I'm glad, as I'll have some questions to post, I'm sure, before too long. I've been really ill for the past month, so I've only been dabbling here and there.

I wonder if many of you have a forum here as your home page. I do. When I get online, it immediately goes to Rose Forum, then I use my Favorites or browser from there.

Similiar to Anne's but even easier! Next time you are visiting your favorite forum just right click in a clear area on the page. You'll get a pop-up menu that says 'Create Shortcut' about halfway down. Left click. This creates an icon on your desktop that you can just double click on anytime to go directly your favorite forum. Works like a charm everytime!
