Growing from Seed

Seeds have germinated, Now What?

I live in the south of Texas and have planted my seeds in covered plastics tubs and milk jugs as well.

They have begun to sprout.. all but the coneflowers of which I am giving those a little bit more time to germinate.

What do I do now that they have begun to sprouted? Do I uncover the plastic containers they are sitting in or do I keep them covered a little longer and if so for how long?

Try posting this same question on the wintersowing forum. There are lots of gardeners in your zone who do the same thing over there, and I know they would quickly answer your question.

If your seeds are in a heated area they can suffer damping off disease if left covered with plastic. Remove the plastic and move to a cooler area with good air circulation. Al

Put the lights closer to the seedlings, about 1 inch away. In your zone, plant them out the beginning of May or when all danger of frost is gone and the weather stays above 55 at night.

Since nobody responded to this question, I punted. First of all I discovered each one was one seed and not a seed pod. So I potted the them and covered them with potting soil leaving the already germinating growing tips out, and bagged the pots to hold moisture in. I got nothing! After a few days I removed the seeds from within the soil, laid them on top of the soil and re-bagged them. They immediately started to grow. (Note to self: don't cover Clivia seed.) They are doing well. Hope this helps someone else.

if you are going to plant it now, you would need to grow it indoors under light. Otherwise its not going to survive the winter if you leave it outside.

I agree with calistoga - the covers are for germinating purposes only, not for growing on. This is assuming you are growing them inside rather than outside. If outside, then yes, the Wintersowing Forum can explain what all to do next. It has an excellent FAQ section on all the basics.

After they germinate and break the soil they need light. Either sunlight or artificial light.
