Oh no - is my phal a NOID?

So I've decided to once again cross my two first orchids (both phals) and flask the seed myself, since I have access to a lab, a hood, with nice little individually packaged sterile flasks, and even agar and an autoclave etc...I've actually previously done a cross and the pod developed but I lost the seed when moving. I thought it would be nice since these are my first two orchids ever. So I was searching around on RHS for my two plants to make sure no one had made a cross already, and to my dismay, I found out that my Phal Anthura Boston isn't there!

The only official source I could find was here and it's a dutch site.

Does that mean that this hybrid was never registered? :( Considering the time and effort put into flasking and growing seeds, I'm not too keen on having an orphan id-less phal. I've contacted the dutch site to see whether they have information on this one, but if anyone has advice / run into a similar problem, please let me know. Thanks :D

A lot of orchids meant for the pot plant market are never registered but given names by the company selling them. Assuming it is them, and it probably is, maybe you can get them to register it or give you the parents' names and permission for you to register it. If not, you have a noid. Unfortunately, this has become more and more common.

oh, how interesting. They claim "BOSTON" is a registered trademark. I'm not finding a registration record, but I'm no expert on Benelux trademarks.

The usual deal in the U.S. is that if it's a trademark, it is not a clonal name or a grex. You can't have both.

The same entity, ANTHURA B.V. CORPORATION, has a patent in the US for what they call ANTHURA GOLD. The link is below.

Long story short, I think you have a noid as far as the RHS is concerned.

Somehow...I jes can't see you in that get-up. :0 I'm sittin' here in just a thong and my apron...it's my day off...jes piddlin' around doin' dishes, dustin', etc. No slippers, tho...I simply abhor anything on my feets! Arthur, I hope I'm not beeing presumptuous in posting this but I took your comment to mean that you are encouraging orchid growers to post how they grow phals. I'm no expert orchid-wise for sure but most of mine (21) are phals that are doing great with my indoor set up for 3 years and bloom every year. They are all NOIDS. My plantroom is a bedroom and the door is kept closed. In winter a heater keeps the room at 75F daytime. I turn it off at night and temp goes down to 68F which is my home thermostat setting. Summer is more challenging. The heater is not used because temp goes up to about 80-85F and the room stays warmer because of south facing windows. In the fall, when outside night temps stay in the 60s, I leave the windows open all night so the plants can get that 10-15 degree temp drop for blooming. Humidity is kept at an ambient 50-75% with the aid of a humidifier. Light in the room is provided by several banks of T5 fluorescents (half of them are warm & half cool) because I also have several other plants in the room that require more intense light. I plan to replace those with (??? Haven't decided) as they die out. The phals are in an area of the room that gets about 1500 FC (per my light meter). There are potted in bark with a small amount of spagnum added in plastic pots with several extra holes drilled on the sides. I have to replace the bark yearly and am thinking about switching to 1/2"-1" lava with some spagnum added in after the plants are done blooming. I water them about every 6 days and mist them almost every morning (sometimes I forget!). A ceiling fan runs 24/day. I seriously considered building a greenhouse and moving them outside along with my collection of ferns but this area's temperatures would require both heating and cooling devices - that on top of the cost of the building. Too cost prohibitive. Besides, I decided that if it ain't broke don't fix it. Lol. My carnivorous plant collection on the other hand is loving Florida weather! Anyway, this set up, born out of necessity living in the north USA until a year ago, works well for me. I hope this narrative will help others who are considering growing these plants indoors. I plan on trying a few paphs as money allows in the same way.

Nice pics! Phals are my favorite. I get interested in others, but It's phals that really keep me in the hobby. Six months of blooming, lots of colors and patterns, you can't beat 'em!!! My first orchid was a gift phal from my boss' wife who grew many orchids, I killed it in 3 months. Tried again a few years later when I quit smoking and needed to stay 'busy', I did a little better this time. Have been growing them as a 'hobby' for 16+ years now :) Bob

Cj, I think I'm becoming one! :(

I was deciding what other cross I could do, and started tracing my Phal Fajen's fireworks up and up in the RHS database hoping to see what kind of parentage it has...and I couldn't even get to a single species parent before giving up! Isn't there some website that can build phylogenetic tree type things to show you the complete hybridization history of a plant?

There is software that will do it, but you have to pay.

Thanks komi - that's useful info :D I have a few friends who are programmers...I wonder if they could write me a program to generate trees if I somehow got the RHS database to them...or maybe that's illegal?

Perhaps you can find a local friend with OrchidWiz, Wildcatt or other orchid software if you do not want to pay for the program. I really enjoy the ability to look up parentages, species composition and award information, plus the photos, when available, are great. Also, it is a way to keep up with the recent name changes.

Perhaps your local orchid society has access to Wildcatt, etc. At mine a laptop is brought to every meeting for use by members.
