Lowe's Orchid Score

I picked up these two orchids at two different Lowe's for the sum of $2 each. I had been hesitant to dive into orchids, as succulents are my main thing (Kaktuskris, that's me) but at this price, I have little to lose.

Say what you will about Lowe's plants, if you get there before they have been abused, they are pretty decent quality. No great rarities, it's true, but good value for the $.

What I have here is a Cattleya hybrid on the right in a 4" pot, Potinaria 'Carolina Autumn'. This had many dead roots, and I lost a leaf, but there are some viable roots and a young psuedobulb waiting to form a new leaf.

On the left, is my newest prize from today, a large Phalaenopsis in a 7" clay pot. The pot alone is worth the price I paid! It has two flower spikes, and I was surprised to find one small flower bud on the very tip of one. On the other spike, I cut it back to where the 3rd flower had formed, in hopes of stimulating another flower spike.

I've passed by bargains like this before, but no more!

I find lot of great deal on lowe's death table, some times its just the pot I want or the plant, I have 2 Phal from lowe's didn't think the would make it but there happy in new pots and lots of TLC, can't go wrong for $2.00 for a nice pot and a plant.

I did the same thing at Lowe's and got an Ascocenda for 10 cents. All it needed was some water. Roots look good and it looks great now.

Well, hengal, not to be one who likes to say "I've got a story better than that...." BUT....Today I went to Lowes, NOT TO BUY PLANTS, but I went to the clearance area to look anyway. While I was considering a marked down clematus, someone yelled at me from the front "Anything there for a dime!" I thought she was kidding, even checked with the cashier to be sure the yeller had the authority to say that. She did indeed! I got 13 perrienials for $1.30 including red daylilies, coral bells, 2 clematis, 2 unusual coreopsis, 2 containers of pink fountain grass....other things that I can't remember. AND, as I was paying I heard that same manager telling the staff they had to "get rid of lots of this stuff". I asked if that meant she would be doing other drastic markdowns and she said yes! So as others have said, Never hurts to check it out! Maybe your Lowes is doing the same! Doing the happy dance in west Ky!

I'm no expert when it comes to orchids. I've been growing phals for almost eight years. My oldest orchid came from Lowe's and 3-4 of my other ones came from Lowe's as well. They have been growing great for years and I would continue to buy them from Lowe's without a doubt. As for the rest of my collection, they have come from eBay. I do agree that arthurm is right when he said that it only takes a few days for a really nice orchid to be a wreck. Happy growing.

Do you belong to a credit union? Also instead of buying a manufactured home, --not sure if this is the same as what we use call trailers etc -- which decreases with value, have you considered other alternatives. Many assisted living places have small apartments you can rent based on income. Also many communities have apartment complexes based on income. You might talk to someone in your area about investing all the money into a home and what kind of savings you have or should have. I am asuming your mom is a senior citizen. Contact AARP, Senior commission of aging, your senior center for finanical advice on whether you should buy or rent.

could *not* get those plants/roots separated, so I cut the bulbs apart; it was very easy, just put the shovel blade between the two & sliced! Almost all the roots remained intact. put each plant in a pot in the shade to recover. There really are "good" days for price reductions on a number of things. A friend clued me in that the best day for mark-downs at the grocery store is Tuesday. Maybe they get new items on Monday evening?

I have never seen an orchid in any condition for 10 cents. Lucky you! I did get a few cacti at Walmart for 10 cents a few years ago, though.

The original tag on my Phal in the photo says $24.98, so $2 is quite a nice discount in my book.

I have also bought bargains from Lowe's but be sure to check for bugs on them. I always repot the ones I buy into bark. I suggest that you do so immediately with the cat or it will rot. Good luck. Shirley

I bought several plants from Lowes. They looked very healthy and had just arrived at the store. Now I find they are turning black on several old leads. I cut the plant back to the good growth and repotted. I have never seen this rotting situation in my orchids before. Anyone know what causes this.

A note on the Catt hybrid. Catts can be tricky to grow in sphagnum. Let the surface get crunchy. If there is any 'give' to the surface, wait.
