Baltimore Conservatory - Orchid Photos

Hi Everyone,

I've posted photos here several times before, because I keep finding orchids that amaze me. I'm really an iris person, but when I see orchids I can't stop taking photos.

I thought it might be nice to share the photos I took on a trip to Baltimore last week. Again, I didn't get their names, but it seems (I could be wrong) orchids are more species oriented rather than named varieties (whereas most irises are known by their cultivar name and the species is usually of secondary interest). So, hopefully someone here will be able to id those that people wonder about.

I hope you find something you enjoy. I apologize if this takes long to load, but I thought thumbs would be easier than hunting them down in the entire gallery.

A very impressive set of fotos! Where in Baltimore did you see these orchids? There are several places that use "Baltimore Conservatory".

Thank-you for your kind words.

It was my first time in Baltimore. So, I don't know the Baltimore area very well, but it was in the same park as the zoo (which I'm editing photos from this evening). Druid Hill Park(?) It was combined with a palm house and parts were under renovation. We almost left without seeing the orchids, because the normal entry was closed.

It was free to get in, but they suggested $2 for donations. More than worth it. Here's a view from outside:

CJ you are welcome! it made miss my time in Florida - where at different times I was house sitting and decompressing. Just got into orchids in june - I was in Jamaica for a week and there were all these tillandsias on the electricity wires. i rode a bicycle up the mountain road to the great morass swamps on a rainy day [early june/rainy season] and there were all these trees with epiphytes growing everywhere. i rode 20 miles away - a huge mango tree on the top of a mountain next to a church. they gave me some fruit to eat and saved the seeds. anyway i kept going and i saw some beautiful gardens with tradescantia pallida hedges. and then by the rocky coast i saw tobacco fields in the rocky bush. I wish i would have looked for orchids then - but anyway - i now feel i love all that tropical vegetation and in brooklyn you see for the most part boring gardens [with exceptions]. I find West Indian and Mexican neighborhoods have the most beautiful plants on teh block. Anyway I liked the BBG more than the NYBG [i found it clean / large / sterile]. The Brooklyn museum got really renovated!

Well, you got the pix imbedded in your post for all to see, Howard. If folks are trying to click on them, they will go to their own Photobucket account (if they have one). If I hover over any pic, it shows just "photobucket.com", not the whole url to your pix. Just have one idea what might cause that. Howard, check to see if a box is marked for Link back to albums. I see also that DTD mentioned Tower Hill Botanical Garden in Boylston. This is another great place to go. In addition to the half price admission I believe if you are a AAA member or WGBH member there is 2 for 1 admission. Also many public libraries have passes for Tower Hill so check out your library. If in the Providence RI area, another neat indoor botanical garden is Roger Williams Botanical Garden center. I also visited there in 2008. I have a small conservatory on the n end of our home with sliding doors facing east and west. It was formerly a bedroom and we added 2 large skylights. The new glass is low E and the plants and orchids that I have in the room are doing well in the winter, despite our rotten winter light. I have added a fancy grow light for some plants on the west side. I would expect that with a south facing conservatory you would have to have some darkening glass or everything would have to be cactus (you too!). By the way, we put ceramic tile on the floor with under-tile heating and the room has a door on it so that I can have my own little atmosphere in it. The other thing that is really important, is a fan going full time. We get such high humidity here and without the fan, I'm sure that there would be mould on everything. I grow orchids so have extra moisture trays. With all of the popular tropicals now, my room is going to be VERY crowded this winter. My grandchildren think this is the nicest room in our home. I agree. I hope you have fun with yours.

As soon as I saw "Druid Hill", I knew exactly where to go. I might make a trip there before the next Maryland Orchid Society meeting.

Thank-you Sheila & Stitz. It was worth it to post these here even if only two people enjoyed them. Can I ask, do you both have high-speed internet? I'm worried people may not be able to view these because of load times. This forum seems much busier than the iris forum. Did it load quickly?

I still have sloooow dialup and your thumbnails loaded fine.
I sometimes have trouble when people post a large photo and it takes forever to load and I usually give up. Thanks for posting.

Satellite makes for a quick load, and the thumb nails help, too! Thanks for sharing! As mentioned above, not everyone posts, even though lots do view and read. I, myself, have mostly been lurking lately, instead of posting.

Beautiful photos, gorgeous orchids!

This forum seems to be busy all year, mainly because orchids are grown indoors or in greenhouses in inclement climates, so there's always something growing or blooming, or needing help!
