Frowine's Miniature Orchids book

If you're downsizing the size of your plants, check out this new book by Steven Frowine from Timber Press.

His emphasis is on plants w/ showy flowers that are large enough to be seen easily.

I started making a list of "must haves" and then stopped because most are gorgeous and like intermediate conditions.

The most helpful part for me is his breaking down smaller plants into 3 categories:

Miniature: to 3" (7.5 cm) high and/or wide

Dwarf: to 8" (20 cm) high and/or wide

Compact: to 12" (30 cm) high and/or wide

For each of the 300 plants Frowine "profiles," pix included, he gives the specific size at maturity, i.e., M 2" for Epidendrum porpax. Sometimes he gives leaf span and height.

Additionally, he lists 200 more miniature plants.

The size ranges are extra helpful for me because everyone's definitions are different. You can get all excited about a "compact" plant on a site, wait to hear from the grower about actual size, and then be bummed because it gets 18" tall and wide.

Has anyone else read this book? Thoughts?
