If your plant is growing a new leaf, the spikes are branching plus you have a keiki, it sounds like your plant is fine. If it were my plant, I would leave the keiki alone. Eventually it should sprout roots and can be seperated from the mother plant.

The green tipped roots are to be encouraged. You can give them a misting. They are not air breathers as you put it unless the humidity is much higher than is likely in your house. When the roots get to be an inch or two long you can plant the keiki in its own pot. Or just cut it off and throw it away now.

Really? I was told the fat green tipped ones were air breathers, I got some miss-information there, didn't I?
The humidity is around 55 to 65% in the orchid room.
So there are two large round green tipped ROOTS growing upward, if I were to cut the keiki from the mother plant at this point in time, it would have no roots at all in the bark, since they are growing upward.
What should the keiki look like when it is ready to cut? I do want to save it as a clone of the mother plant.

You might consider leaving the keiki on the mother until you're certain it's strong enough to be on its own. Taking the keiki off too soon may slow down it's growth. The mother plant will give it what it needs to make it strong.

The keiki is getting very large 2" leaves with two large 1" roots, I will wait as you suggested, I just thought maybe it was too big a load for mom to carry, the other stalk is trying to shoot and will bloom and the new leaf is coming along nicely, it is a happy plant. I still haven't figured out what to do about putting the roots in bark since they are growing upward, shouldn't there be some small white ones that go at least on top of the bark?

No. don't worry about the roots. I usually let them get a boat load of them before I start potting them up. I think I gave some pointers on the keiki FAQ, so you might want to look at that one. PHals generally have the same sized roots over all...like worms sort of, and not several different sizes (that is to say thicknesses) with some on top or underneath.

Phal roots can photosynthesize (that's why they are green), and you'll often see them reaching toward the light. When I repot my plants (and I'm doing a bunch of them now because I didn't get to it earlier and they are WAY nuts), I soak them first so the roots are more flexible, then I put them in the pots by gently bending them if I have to, and putting the bark around it. Sometimes I break them, sometimes they get cracked. I just don't worry about it anymore.

Sacriledge! However, when we first start growing I think most of us tend to mother-hen the plants....they actually do better if we don't hover over them, but that's just mho.
