Why isn't akebia (chocolate vine) more popular?
Comments (10)When I was at One Green World one Fall day a couple of years ago,I saw it growing along some fences on the grounds. It's fruit looked strangely beautiful as it opened up.I had to ask one of the workers passing by what it was, because it was new to me. It was one of their Harvest Festival days and there was a room with different kinds of fruit to sample.Akebia was one of them. After trying it,I made a decision right away not to grow it.The flavor was odd, like what shane wrote about. Comments (10)They are fairly popular here in my area and seem to grow at a pretty good rate. I have quite a few. Our city lined the main street through downtown with them probably around 10 years ago. Those trees are probably 30' to 40' tall now and starting to provide a little shade. The potential for fruiting of seed-grown trees is one reason people don't often choose them. And, even though ginkgos grow reasonably well here, they still don't keep pace with the trash trees (think Bradford pears, etc) that the horticultural zombie class still seems to choose....See MoreDevoniensis- bloom last year, not this year -why?
Comments (8)It's a folk-saying, you know? Not a law of nature. --Grin-- Those plants, they don't have calendars. All it REALLY means is that . . . FIRST, the plant spends a period growing roots. During that time, you don't see much top-growth action. That time might be in a pot, or it might be in the ground. Eventually, it's got enough root to push up some actual growth. Not BIG growth. Not mature growth, but you do see something happening. The plant is getting bigger -- and it is STILL developing an expanding root system. Then, after a while, the plant begins to put up real, almost mature canes. How long it all takes, how long it sits, how long it "creeps," how big it leaps -- that all depends on the plant and the environmental conditions. So what they do for you will prob'ly be different from what they do for ME. But I'll give you an example. From last year's cemetery sale, we brought home two roses we didn't buy -- but which were way too small to sell. One of those (Pale Pink Noisette/Little Mary V Tower) has put up a couple of little canes, about 8 inches long. Another, a 'White Maman Cochet' had two little tired leaves. Suddenly, those leaves fell, and it put on four new crisp leaves. So I figure that by next spring, they will have finished sleeping, and will be creeping, and MIGHT even go into a 5-Gallon. They won't LEAP 'til they're in someone's garden. Jeri...See MoreWhy are Japanese Iris not as popular as Bearded Iris?
Comments (8)JI irises are the easiest to grow and they come more easily from seed than any irises I know. I love them and they grow well this far south. The drawbacks are: They bloom very late after the onset of heat in the South. Many blooms last only a day. Sometimes with the multifalled ones, in the humidity they get all tangled up and do not 'fall' or bloom properly. They soon exhaust the soil they are in and have to be moved to another area, not just replanted in the same spot unless you had another foot of soil to the bed. Otherwise, they are fantastic, and I continue to have a nice patch of them, knowing all of the problems I have to contend with. A good selling point: Many of the older varieties can pass for modern ones, so you don't have to spend a wad to get good looking varieties. Surprisingly, they can tolerate drought quite well. When you plant seed from modern cultivars, you will be surprised at the number of keepers you'll get, unlike most bearded. I try to get early bloom, three falled varieties. There are some three falled varieties that are so big, they look like they have six falls. Hatsu Kagami is a great parent for getting wide falls. Try your luck with Iris City Gardens near Nashville, TN. Walter Moores...See MoreJohn (PNW zone 8)
