orchids left out in snow storm

I have a half dozen orchids that I actually rescued from the garbage a few years ago. I've had them in the house for a couple of years and they've survived, throwing off a shoot and flower now and then...but none of them were really flourishing.

I brought them up to the roof this summer and put them under the shade of a pin oak tree. They started to get more leaves and healthier looking and I basically ignored them.

They got peripherally watered when the

drip watering system went off for the oak tree.

Saturday we had a snowstorm and temps were about 32, and the following day was in the 30's as well and and ice formed in the garden. I forgot about the orchids or I would have brought them inside. When I looked at them yesterday, they looked amazing and none the worse for the snow. They look really healthy and lush.

They are mostly Phalaenopsis with a couple of Oncidiums.

I am wondering if I can leave them out in the winter (NYC)

or was I just lucky this time? I hate to move them...they seem so happy where they are. I was thinking maybe as the cold weather gets more frequent, I could cover them with bubble plastic. Is this feasible?
